Isom and Hatch give No. 10 BYU 2-0 win at Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – Taylor Isom and Ashley Hatch scored a goal each as BYU beat Utah 2-0 in the Deseret First Duel Monday afternoon at Ute Field.
"It's been a while since we've gotten a win up here," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We didn't play a perfect game, but we did what we needed to for a win."
The No. 10 Cougars (4-1) notched their first shutout of the season behind 10 saves from junior goalkeeper Hannah Clark, who got her first career complete-game shutout.
It was BYU's first win at Utah (3-2) since 2010, when the Cougars beat the Utes 2-1.
BYU got on the board in the 21st minute on the second career goal for Isom. Michele Vasconcelos sent a short corner kick on the ground toward the edge of the 18-yard box and Isom came up to boot it to the right of Utah goalkeeper Carly Nelson on one touch to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Isom's first career goal came around this time of year last season, in a 2-0 win against UNLV on Sept. 12, 2015.
The rest of the first half went scoreless as both goalkeepers made some nice saves. Making her second career start, Clark had three saves as the Cougars averted close calls.
BYU scored a beautiful goal in the 61st minute, as Bizzy Phillips Bowen set up Nadia Gomes, who feigned a shot and dished to Hatch, running toward the right post. Hatch gathered the pass and put it far post for a 2-0 Cougar advantage.
Hatch's eighth goal of the season was also the 36th of her career, tying her for sixth on the BYU all-time scoring list with Michelle Jensen Peterson.
For Gomes, it was her team-leading fifth assist of the year. Phillips Bowen tallied her first of 2016.
Clark and the Cougar defense held steady for the clean-sheet win.
The Cougars play at home on Thursday against Southern Methodist. That game starts at 7 p.m. MDT and will be televised on BYUtv, with the radio broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network, BYU Radio (Sirius XM 143) and ESPN 960 AM.
