BYU ties 1-1 with Cal State Fullerton
PROVO, Utah - No. 17 BYU recorded its second tie of the season against Cal State Fullerton 1-1 Friday night at South Field.
“I think that we were able to come out and played with a little bit more energy and passion this game,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “We are still figuring out our formation and who is going to play where. I thought we got off to a great start, probably our best start so far. But, Fullerton is a very good, very athletic team.”
Senior forward Avery Walker scored the first goal of the game in the 26th minute of the first half. Sophomore Elise Flake dribbled the ball down to the left end line and crossed it back to Walker who was standing on the six-yard line. Walker quickly trapped the ball and blasted it into the top right corner of the net. It was Walker's first goal of the 2017 season and her second career goal.
Cal State Fullerton (CSF) quickly answered back three minutes later with a goal of its own. Samantha Koemans scored her second goal of the season after floating the ball over senior goalkeeper Hannah Clark’s head to the far post.
Going into the second half, both BYU (0-1-2) and CSF (2-0-1) were evenly matched with six and five shots, respectively.
The Cougars quickly fired four more shots on goal in the second half while CSF wasn’t able to get a shot on goal until the 73rd minute. Despite both teams added effort on the field, at the end of regulation time, the score remained 1-1 and the game proceeded into overtime.
Both teams were able to continue to put pressure on the goal in the first period of overtime, but no goals were scored.
Freshman Cameron Tucker, who has scored the only other goal of the season besides Walker for BYU, was subbed in for the second period of overtime. While Tucker was able to create opportunities for the Cougars to score, the ball didn't make its way into the back of the net for either team. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Cougars have a week break before returning to South Field next Friday, Sept 1, against the UCLA Bruins at 7:00 MDT. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and radio broadcasts can be heard on BYU Radio (Sirius XM), ESPN 960 AM and BYUCougars.com.
