NC State upsets Arkansas 2-1
PROVO, Utah – The North Carolina State women's soccer team upset No. 3 seed Arkansas 2-1 at South Field on Thursday.
First Half
North Carolina State (12-6-4, 4-2-4 ACC) took a 1-0 lead over No. 3 seed Arkansas (17-4-2, 8-1-1 SEC) in the 18th minute when Kia Ranken put the ball in the back of the net after a blocked shot landed at her feet at the top of the box. The goal marked the senior’s second goal of the season.
The Razorbacks had three shots on goal in the opening half with Wolfpack keeper Jessica Berlin recording the three saves. It only took NC State two shots on frame to score the only goal of the half.
Second Half
The Wolfpack got off to a quick start in the second half with Lulu Guttenberger scoring in the 48th minute off a corner from Ricci Walkling. The goal marked Guttenberger’s fourth goal on the year and Walkling’s 10th assist.
In a late comeback push, Tori Cannata scored the only goal for Arkansas to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 88th minute. The Razorbacks’ last attempt to even the score came at the end of regulation as a potential game-tying goal sailed just above the far corner of the crossbar as time expired. NC State clinched the 2-1 victory to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
