Mozingo’s two highlight-worthy goals earn WCC player of the week honor
SAN MATEO, Calif. — BYU women’s soccer sophomore forward Brecken Mozingo collected West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Coming off a loss against Utah State and a two-week break in schedule, Mozingo’s two highlight-worthy goals helped BYU land a 6-1 victory over No. 16 Gonzaga on Saturday, Oct. 2.
In the first West Coast Conference game of the season for both teams, the Cougars knocked the Bulldogs out of their eight-game winning streak at home. In the seventh minute of the match, Mozingo set the tone for the Cougars and scored the first goal of the night, with the ball landing in the bottom left corner of the net. Only six minutes later, Mozingo sent a left-footed bullet bending inside the right post and boosted the Cougar lead to 3-0. Mozingo’s second goal over Gonzaga was her fifth goal of the season.
Mozingo had two goals and four points this week. On the whole, Mozingo now has eight goals in her career out of the 27 games she’s played in as a Cougar.
This award marks the third WCC weekly honors collected by BYU this season, and second individual career honors for Mozingo this season. Mozingo is fifth in goals (5), sixth in shots (35) and eighth in points (12) for the WCC in 2021.
