Cougar Kickers end season in Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif., (Nov. 13) -- For the third straight year, Santa Clara has ended BYU's run at the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, this time a 2-0 defeat in Santa Clara, Saturday.
The Cougars finish the season with a 21-4 record while the number one Broncos improve to 21-0 on the year and advance to the third round of the NCAA Championships.
Senior Mandy Clements scored both goals for Santa Clara, one in each half. The Broncos had 15 shots on goal, holding BYU to just three shots.
"We gave it everything we had and I'm very proud of our team and how we ended our season," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "It was our honor to play a great team like Santa Clara. They are extremely fast and they have great technical speed with the ball."
BYU's defense held the Broncos powerful offense to just four shots on goal in the second half.
Santa Clara's next opponent will be UCLA who defeated San Diego 2-1 in overtime in other second round action.
"We had a few good scoring opportunities and our play off the bench was excellent, and this has been a great year and it's a good way for us to finish our season. We need to remember that we're still a young team, this being our fifth season and third straight NCAA appearance. We'll be back next year," added Rockwood.
