BYU Tramples Wyoming for Fourth Conference Shutout
PROVO -- Four conference wins, all shutouts. The BYU women's soccer team continued its domination over Mountain West Conference rivals Thursday night, posting a resounding 7-0 victory over the University of Wyoming.
With the exception of a tough weekend loss to San Diego State, the Cougars (15-3, 4-1 conference) have been unstoppable in the new Mountain West, outscoring their opponents 21-2. Each of BYU's conference wins have been shutout victories.
Five different Cougars scored against Wyoming (3-12, 1-4 conference), with senior All-American Maren Hendershot and junior Sara Reading recording two goals each. Reading scored unassisted just two and a half minutes into play, and Hendershot followed up five minutes later with two goals in the space of just ten seconds.
BYU led 6-0 at the half and outshot the Cowgirls 38-3 in the contest. Freshman standout Jeni Williardson, Janet Jensen and Karen Wunderli-Robbins also connected for goals, while Kim Lowe, Jennie Christianson, Jennifer Love and Natalyn Lewis contributed with assists in the win.
"We came out with a lot of intensity tonight," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We scored three goals in the first ten minutes, and you can't ask for more than that, especially coming off a hard weekend."
The Cougars next host Air Force Academy in their final conference matchup of the season. Air Force lost a Thursday afternoon meeting against Utah, dropping out of a four-way tie for first place in the conference. Play will begin at 6 p.m. at South Field.
