Cougars Win Catfight With Wildcats
PROVO -- The BYU women's soccer team got back to their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Weber State University on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 7-3-1 on the season while the Wildcats drop to 2-5-2, yet head coach Jennifer Rockwood sees a lot of room for improvement.
"We have to find a way to be more consistent," said Rockwood. "We played with intensity on Friday against Florida, but Weber out hustled us the whole second half."
Reading the stats, you couldn't tell that the Cougars were out hustled as they out shot the Wildcats 18-11 and gained a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. However, most of those numbers were recorded in the first period of play.
The first half of action saw the Cougars jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from senior All-American and Hermann Trophy candidate Aleisha Rose and sophomore Jaime Rendich.
Rose put BYU up 1-0 with her second goal of the season as she took a pass from Rendich, dribbled the ball into the box, managed to side step Weber's keeper Melanie Stratford and tapped the ball in for an open goal.
It took the Cougars only six more minutes to put in their second goal of the game as junior Krissa Campbell found Rendich who punched the ball in just past the keeper's hands in the 20th minute of the game.
After half time the Wildcats came out with intensity and determination as they allowed the Cougars only five shots in the second half after giving the Cougars 13 looks at the goal in the first.
"I felt that we needed to put another goal in the net but we couldn't get it," said Rockwood. "In soccer a 2-0 lead is nothing."
In the second period Weber mounted a comeback and cut the Cougar lead by one in the 60th minutes with a goal by Anna Neisen, who headed in the ball off a throw-in by Amy Baird that slipped past keeper Natalie Evans.
Neither team would score again the rest of the way as the Cougars escaped with the 2-1 win.
Friday night marks another home game for the Cougars who this time will be hosting No. 14 USC at South Stadium at 7:00 p.m. (MDT). That night is Youth Soccer and High School Team Night as well as Chamber of Commerce Night. Commerce businesses get in for $2 with a flyer and youth get in for $1 with their uniform.
