HONOLULU -- Playing in the islands for the first time since 1997, the No. 16 BYU women's soccer team (12-4-2) battled the Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii (13-4-2) to a 2-2 double overtime tie in Honolulu.

This is the second time this season the Cougars have played to a double overtime tie, with the first game of the season against nationally ranked Michigan ending in a 0-0 tie.

Hawaii got off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to the offensive firepower of sophomore Natasha Kai who scored both of the Wahine goals in the first period. Kai leads the NCAA in scoring with 29 strikes on the year.

Before the first period would end the Cougars got back into the game as All-American and Hermann Trophy candidate Aleisha Rose found sophomore Brooke Thulin off a corner kick and Thulin drilled in a shot from 13 yards out to cut the Wahine lead by one at 2-1 heading into half time.

In the second half the Cougars dominated the field, taking a 12-5 advantage on shots and managing to tie the game and send the teams into overtime.

With 10 minutes left in the game, Rose fired a shot that was blocked by keeper Mahie Atay, but senior Jennifer Fielding was there to knock in the rebound and tie game in the 81st minute at 2-2.

In overtime, BYU out shot the Wahine 8-2 but was not able to break the tie as the game ended in a draw.

The No. 16 Cougars who are 4-1-0 in conference, will host in-state rival No. 14 Utah (14-2-0, 5-0-0) in the final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 1, at South Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The game will determine the 2003 Regular Season Champion and decide who gets a first-round bye in the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
