BYU Loses 2-1 in Close Game to WSU
BYU dropped it's third consecutive game in a 2-1 loss to Washington State Saturday at South Stadium before an announced crowd of 1,595.
Washington State waisted no time scoring in the game's first minute with some pinpoint passing from senior Christie Spear to junior Alix Rustrum who found the back of the goal and put WSU up 1-0. BYU finally settled down and with just six minutes remaining in the half, BYU had its first opportunity to score but sophomore Annie Zwahlen barely missed a left-footed shot that would have put BYU on the board.
Sophomore Claire Thomas preserved the 1-0 score with an excellent slide tackle on a breakaway by WSU forward Rustrum, knocking the ball out of play. BYU nearly evened the score 1-1 just 15 seconds before halftime on a corner kick by junior Jaime Rendich. Rendich crossed the ball and the shot by sophomore Amberlea Anderson sailed over the crossbar.
Starting the second half, BYU came out with more intensity, looking to connect better with each other and control the tempo of the game. With 27 minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Jenavieve Phillips flipped a pass behind her back to freshman Carolyn Swenson who weaved through the Washington State defense and shot the ball passed the junior goalkeeper Katie Hultin to score her second goal of the season and tie the score 1-1.
Swenson nearly scored again in the 18th minute after Rendich dribbled the ball passed serveral WSU defenders and dropped the ball back to her infront of the box. Swenson couldn't quit finish as her shot went over the crossbar.
WSU pulled back ahead with 14:27 left in the game on a free kick by Megan Cecchini that skipped passed BYU goalkeeper Ericka Woodbury to Natalie Elkind, who tapped the ball in the net, putting WSU up 2-1. The score was almost tied again with just under five minutes in regulation on a BYU corner kick. Thomas headed the ball to sophomore Brooke Bowman, who then headed the ball toward the goal. The ball hit the crossbar and was cleared by WSU goakeepr Hultin. WSU dodged another bullet with under a minute left in the game when Spear sealed the victory with a phenomemal defensive play. Spear stopped a shot with her head and cleared the ball out of the box, after BYU's Thomas headed in what looked like would be a sure goal.
