Fourth Larkin Goal in Sixth BYU Shutout
PROVO -- The proverbial record skipped again Monday at South Stadium: junior Hermann Trophy Candidate Katie Larkin (Draper, Utah, Alta HS) scored her fourth game-winning goal in BYU's sixth straight shutout as the Cougars beat the Pacific Tigers 1-0.
BYU is now the only team in the nation and Erika Woodbury, BYU's career saves and shutouts record holder, is the only goalkeeper in the nation to not have allowed a goal in 2007. That also means that BYU leads the nation in Goals Against Average at 0.0 and Shutout Percentage at 1.000.
"Pacific is a great team and they really came out quick," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Andrea Willis and Jessica Harmon-Carter are tough to get past, though, let alone Woodbury. We really have to attribute our success to our overall team defense."
The first half was scoreless for both teams. BYU recorded nine shots with five on goal compared to Pacific's four and two. The Tigers, however, led in the corner-kick category with five opportunities to BYU's none.
As has become the norm for the blue and white, BYU came out of the locker room firing in the second half. In the 50th minute, Larkin crossed the Cougars' first corner kick of the game to Katie Fellows of Sandy, Utah (Alta HS) who hit a header off the crossbar.
Fellows had another header in the 61st minute that missed wide right by only two feet, and another header that hit the outside of the net just outside the post only two minutes later.
With just 15 minutes left in the contest, Carolyn Swenson of Fruit Heights, Utah (Davis HS) beat her defender to the endline and crossed the ball to Larkin who was waiting unmarked in front of the goal. Larkin hit it in on one touch for her fourth goal of the season and Swenson?s first assist of the season. It was the Cougars' 18th shot of the game.
"It felt so good," Larkin said. "We held our breath for a bit, but it was nice to knock it in and take a little pressure off for the last part of the game."
The Cougars finished the game out-shooting the Tigers 20-6 and racked up seven corner kicks in the second half to lead that category as well 7-5.
BYU will face in-state-rival Weber State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Ogden. The Wildcats are 3-2 on the season and beat Boise State 3-0 in their last game. The Cougars will return home to face Cal Poly on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Provo.
