PROVO -- The Cougars' four-goal first half was more than enough to give the team a 4-1 victory over TCU at South Stadium on Thursday as the team competed in its first conference game of the season.

The win improves BYU's record to 11-0-2 and 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Cougars broke TCU's three game winning streak, and extended their own winning streak to five games. Hermann Trophy candidate Katie Larkin scored her 11th and 12th goals of the season in the game, along with her 10th game-winner.

"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I told our forwards that if they moved the ball around, it would provide more opportunities to score, and that's what happened."

It had been almost two years to the date since BYU scored four goals in a half, or even a game. On Oct. 13, 2005 the Cougars scored four goals in the first half on their way to a 6-0 win over Air Force.

In the 6th minute of play against the Horned Frogs, on Larkin's third assist of the season, Katie Fellows scored her first goal in 2007 to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

TCU responded three minutes later with a goal of its own. Michelle Nguyen, clear of defenders, kicked the ball to the left post past the hands of BYU keeper Erika Woodbury. It was only the fourth goal allowed by Woodbury all season.

In the 23rd minute, Larkin drilled the game-winner unassisted into the top left corner from the right side to put the Cougars up for good.

Freshman Nicole Urry, who started the game in place of an injured Karen Cook, found the goal for the first time this season with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half. She kicked the ball into the penalty area where it bounced over the head of the TCU keeper into the goal.

Larkin's second goal of the night came about one minute later on an assist from Becca Riddle. TCU defenders controlled the ball, but let it slip away and Larkin reaped the benefits from 18 yards out. She put the ball in the back of the net to mark the second time this season that she has scored more than one goal in a game.

"It was great to score that many points on [TCU]," said Larkin. "After constantly winning games by only one goal, it gets a little stressful after a while. Tonight felt really good."

BYU's defense also had a noteworthy performance as they recorded two team saves. The first team save came early in the first half by Hermann Trophy candidate Jessica Harmon-Carter when a ball slipped from Woodbury's hands. The second team block came when Amanda Draeger blocked a nearly open-goal shot in the 67th minute.

Up next the Cougars will be looking to start 2-0 in MWC play for the first time since 2003 as they face in-state rival, the University of Utah, on Saturday at 7 p.m. at South Stadium.

Fans are reminded to get to the game early and wear blue to support their BYU team. This will be the second game of the new Deseret First Duel between the two schools. The first game will take place on Friday when the BYU women's volleyball team takes on the Utes in Salt Lake.

Special Promotions for Saturday's game vs. Utah
