PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – With both games coming down to the final inning, BYU softball split its first two games of the 2019 season. The Cougars fell to No. 9 South Carolina 4-3 first, but held on to win against No. 18 Baylor 4-3 on the first day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday.
“As coaches we are proud of the way our team competed today,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “After a tough loss in game one, we fought through a tough start in game two and beat a very good Baylor team. It was a great team win.”
To kick off the 2019 season, BYU (1-1, 0-0 WCC) gave up a heartbreaker to No. 9 South Carolina (1-1, 0-0 SEC) in the first game of the day. Two runs from the Gamecocks in the bottom of the sixth inning ultimately gave BYU its first loss of the season 4-3.
When the Cougars faced No. 18 Baylor (1-1, 0-0 BIG 12) for their second game of the day, the Bears had just beaten the Gamecocks 4-1, but BYU was ready to go. Protecting a one-run lead with the bases loaded and only one out in the top of the seventh, BYU maintained its composure and finished off the 4-3 win over the Bears.
Junior Rylee Jensen tallied three hits, an RBI as well as one run across the two games. In her first game since a season-ending injury last year, Arissa Paulson pitched 6.1 innings against Baylor and tallied her first win of the year while also going 2 for 3 at the plate and recording an RBI.
