BYU wins first two at home over Pacific

PROVO, Utah – Big hits at the right time lifted the BYU softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Pacific, beating the Tigers 10-2 and 11-8 in the first two home games of the season at Gail Miller Field Friday night.

"Our bats were alive tonight," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We executed well and came up with key hits all night. We also played excellent defense. These were good team wins. 

Arissa Paulson hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to put the exclamation point on the win in game one, while Olivia Sanchez smoked a ball up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to break an 8-8 tie to score Martha Epenesa from third for the game-winner in the second game of the twin bill.

In the circle, Arissa Paulson also pitched 5.1 innings in game two, earning the win after leaving the game in the fifth, but coming back in the sixth to finish. Autumn Moffat earned the win in game one, pitching 5.0 innings, scattering four hits, allowing two runs and struck out six.

Game One

Game Highlights:

  • BYU (18-19, 4-1 WCC) used a five-run third inning to jump out ahead, fueled by a pair of home runs

  • The Cougars played error free softball with solid defense, allowing just four hits and two runs in the game

Player Highlights:

  • Rylee Jensen: 4-4, 3R, 1-triple

  • Arissa Paulson: 1-3, 2R with a grand slam

  • Marissa Chavez: 2-3 with a three-run homer.

BYU vs. Pacific Box Score Game 1

After a leadoff triple by Rylee Jensen in the bottom of the third inning, Taylei Williams homered to right center, giving BYU a 2-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Libby Sugg and Arissa Paulson walked, then with two outs Marissa Chavez blasted one to right center over the fence, making the score 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jensen singled to right field and later scored on an RBI double by Sugg to add another run to bring the score up to 6-0.

Pacific’s (14-24, 0-5 WCC) Hailey Reed walked in the top of the fifth inning before the Tigers got on the board from a two-run homer by Jessica Mabrey to make the score 6-2.

The Cougars answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning in a big way after loading the bases for Arissa Paulson. Paulson smashed a grand slam over the center field fence to end the game early in a 10-2 walkoff by the NCAA run rule.

Game Two

Game Highlights:

  • Both teams combined for 19 runs and 24 hits, including 10 extra base hits

  • BYU used three different pitchers including Arissa Paulson, who started the game, left in the beginning fifth inning and returned late in the sixth

Player Highlights:

  • Marissa Chavez: 3-4, 4 RBI, 2 doubles

  • Olivia Sanchez: 2-2, 2 RBI, 1 double

  • Lexi Tarrow, 3-3, 3R, 1 RBI

BYU vs. Pacific Game 2 Box

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Arissa Paulson scored on an RBI double by Lexi Tarrow. Shortly after, a dropped fly ball in center field brought Sanchez and Tarrow home to lead 3-2.

In the third inning, Sanchez slammed a double to center and sent Emily Erickson home to make it 4-2. Later in the inning, Marissa Chavez singled and scored Aubrielle Paulson for a 5-2 edge.

In the top of the fifth, Pacific’s Caity Sung, ripped a two-run double to cut the Cougar lead to 5-4. A few moments later, Sung scored on another RBI double by Caitlin Reynolds to tie the game 5-5.

In the bottom half of the inning, Chavez doubled to left center and Brooke Vander Heide scored, while Tarrow took third. A bunt by Alyssa Podhurcak scored Tarrow and soon after Chavez scored on Jensen’s single to center, bringing the score to 8-5.

Pacific wasn’t going away yet as Madison Kahwaty homered with two on to tie the game again at 8-8 in the top of the sixth.

After a leadoff double by Sugg, Epenesa took her place to run and advanced to third after a bunt by Emily Erickson. Epenesa then scored on an RBI single by Sanchez on what proved to be the game winner.

Chavez doubled again to add some insurance, scoring two more runs to make it 11-8 heading into the top of the seventh. After Pacific led off the seventh with a double, Arissa Paulson struck out the next three batters to secure the win.

The Cougars remain at home Saturday, April 13, to face Pacific again at 1 p.m. MDT. The game will be streamed on TheW.tv and live stats will be available on the BYU softball schedule page.

BYU softball home opener this weekend

PROVO, Utah – After eight straight weeks on the road, BYU returns to Gail Miller Field for its home opener against Pacific for a weekend series. 

BYU Game Notes Week 9

The Cougars were scheduled to play Utah State on Tuesday, in Logan but the game was cancelled due to rain. BYU will open its 10-game home stand against Pacific for its second West Coast Conference series with a doubleheader on Friday followed by one game on Saturday. 

BYU beings its weekend series on Friday, April 12, with a doubleheader against Pacific at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. MT. The games on Friday will be on BYUtv with the Saturday game on TheW.tv.

BYU Storylines

HOME OPENER. After eight straight weeks and 36 games on the road, the BYU softball team returns home for a weekend series against Pacific. 

NATIONAL ACTIVE LEADER. Libby Sugg is currently No. 2 nationally among active career leaders in RBI with 202. Sugg has tallied 21 so far this season including tying her career-high of five RBI against UTEP.

CHASING THE CHARTS. A handful of BYU softball players are moving up in the BYU all-time record books. Senior Libby Sugg finished the 2018 season ranked No. 2 and No. 3 at BYU in career on-base percentage (.455) and slugging percentage (.700), respectively. She continues to move up in other categories including No. 3 in RBI (202), No. 5 in homers (47) and No. 5 in doubles (42). After this weekend, Arissa Paulson moved into the No. 9 spot for career shutouts (6) and No. 10 in career strikeouts with 210.

BACK-TO-BACK WEEKLY AWARDS. Arissa Paulson was named WCC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. She won the award last week, when BYU swept the weekly awards. Paulson struck out a career-high 11 batters against Loyola Marymount this past weekend, pitching a complete game, allowing only one run and no walks. This was BYU’s eighth award this season and the second time a BYU player has won back-to-back weekly awards.

• Pacific is 14-22 on the season and 0-3 in conference after opening conference play last weekend against San Diego.

• BYU leads the series 17-2 but the Tigers gave BYU its lone loss in conference play last season. 

• Brian Kolze is in his 27th season as the head coach of the Tigers. He holds a 763-700-1 overall record in his 27 seasons.
