Erickson sisters hit homers as BYU splits with Boise State

PROVO, Utah — BYU softball split a doubleheader with Boise State (L 6-4, W 4-1) on Friday evening at Gail Miller Field.  

Game One vs. Boise State | Boise State 6, BYU 4

Game Highlights

  • HannahJo Peterson doubled off the left-center wall in her first at bat and scored off an Arissa Paulson RBI single to give BYU an early 1-0 lead

BYU got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame. HannahJo Peterson doubled off the left-center wall and scored two batters later off an Arissa Paulson RBI single up the middle.

The Broncos answered in the top of the second, as a solo shot to left tied the game at one-all. Boise State added another two runs in the third inning to go up 3-1.

In the bottom of the third, the Cougars tacked on a run to cut into their deficit, 3-2. Violet Zavodnik reached base on a fielder’s choice before advancing to second on a Paulson single to left field. Alyssa Podhurcak then singled to right, driving Zavodnik home.

The Broncos extended their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 6-2 advantage.

BYU knocked on the door in the bottom of the seventh, as Martha Epenesa drove in a pair of runs on a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single up the middle. The Cougars couldn’t quite overcome their deficit, however, ultimately falling 6-4.

  • The Erickson sisters each recorded home runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the game for the Cougars. These home runs give Kaylee the first of her career and Emilee the second of her season.

    After two and a half scoreless innings to open the game, Kaylee Erickson scored the Cougars’ first run of the day off a Peterson sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

    BYU scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. Emilee Erickson’s homer to left center sent her and Lo Salcedo home to put the Cougars up 3-1. Kaylee Erickson followed it up hitting the team’s second home run of the game moments later, corralling the Broncos for good with a 4-1 lead.

    The Cougars are now 12-13 on the season and cap-off their third home matchup of the week with SUU on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. MDT on BYUtv.

    Softball returns home after 687 days away

    PROVO, Utah – After 687 days away from Gail Miller Field, BYU softball returns home for its season home opener against Stanford on Wednesday, March 24. 

    The Cougars did not play a home game during the 2020 season as the season was canceled four days before BYU was scheduled to have its home opener.
