LOS ANGELES -- The BYU women's softball team split their double-header against Loyola Marymount University. The Cougars shut out the Lions 5-0, in the first game and lost 13-4 in the second game of the afternoon. The Cougars are now 5-5 in season play.
The Cougars played excellent defense in the first game to for their first shut out of the season. Liz Boydston slammed a three-run home run in the first inning to take a quick lead. Freshman Lauren Watson stole home in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Megan Johnson scored the final run in the fifth when Brooke Cadiente brought her home on a fielder's choice. Ariel Capra (2-0) picked up the win in five solid innings.
In the second game, the Cougars were down 5-4 after the top of the seventh inning, but the Lions scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh extend the win 13-4. Cadiente provided a spark with a two-run home run, her fourth of the season. She also leads the team in RBI with 15. Cynthia Fallowfield (3-2) picked up the loss for the Cougars.
The Cougars face UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 2 p.m. before playing in the "Softball By the Beach" Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara Friday and Saturday.
