ST. GEORGE -- For the second consecutive year, the BYU women's softball team upset a ranked Washington program at the Red Desert Classic in St. George hosted by the University of Utah. Captain Brooke Cadiente led the way, smashing two home runs as the Cougars won 6-4. In their second game of the day, the Cougars avenged a loss to UC Santa Barbara last week with a 4-3 win over the Gauchos in the eighth inning. The Cougars improved to 9-8 for the season and move above the .500 mark.
Cadiente hit her first home run in the first inning, a three-run blast to give the Cougars a quick 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Cougars' bats went ferocious as three different players blasted solo home runs. Kate Walker hit a solo shot, followed by another solo shot from All-American Oli Keohohou, and a third solo shot from Cadiente, her second of the game. Cadiente finished 303 with four RBI. Both she and Keohohou lead the team with seven home runs a piece on the season. MWC Pitcher of the Week Ariel Capra (4-1) pitched a complete game and struck out four to pick up the win.
After losing to UC Santa Barbara 2-4 last Thursday, the Cougars won a close game in eight innings 4-3, in the second game of the day. Milli Jones went 2-4 and had the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory. Cynthia Fallowfield (5-3) picked up her second straight win.
"Today was a very good day," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "We hope to continue our success tomorrow against Oregon and Utah State."
The Cougars play PAC-10 foe Oregon tomorrow at 12 p.m. The game will mean a lot to Kate Walker, who transferred from Oregon after starting every game last year as a freshman. BYU plays Utah state at 2 p.m.

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team will travel to St. George this weekend for the annual Red Desert Classic hosted by the University of Utah. The softball team went 3-4 in southern California last week as part of a two-week road trip. The team is currently 7-8 and hope to break the .500 mark this weekend. The team hopes to continue on the success they had last Saturday in which they produced 12 runs apiece with victories over Providence and Santa Clara.
On Friday the Cougars will play No. 12 Washington at 12 p.m. followed by Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. Last season the Cougars upset the Huskies in their first win ever against a ranked opponent 7-6, led by two home runs from Oli Keohohou.
On Saturday the Cougars play PAC-10 foe Oregon at 12 p.m. followed by in-state rival Utah State. The Cougars start Kate Walker at shortstop, who transferred from the Ducks after her freshman campaign last year. The Aggies should provide a tough game with bragging rights at stake.
"We are excited to be playing," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "We are look to turn the corner and play consistently throughout the rest of the season."
