PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team defeated in-state rival Southern Utah 4-3, 10-2 in their season home-opener at Gail Miller Field, Saturday. The Cougars improve to 18-10 on the season and won their sixth straight.
The first game was delayed one hour due to a spring snow storm, but the weather cleared and both games were able to be played. SUU took the lead to go up 3-2, but the Cougars scored in the bottom of the sixth on a critical error to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, All-American Oli Keohohou hit a solo home run, her 13th of the season, to end the game 4-3. Sophomore Ariel Capra (5-2) picked up the win allowing only four hits.
In the second game, BYU came out aggressive and scored in every inning to win 10-2 in five innings due to the eight-run rule. Senior Kari Pringle went went 2-2 with two RBI and a walk. Senior Liz VanderLinden hit two triples, a BYU record, and batted in three RBI. Cynthia Fallowfield (9-4) won for the Cougars.
"I'm impressed with the mental toughness of the team to play despite of what the weather throws them," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "I was very please with the way we played consistent in the second game.
The Cougars travel to California next week to play St. Mary on Mar. 22 and top ten Stanford on Mar. 23. The next home game is Mar. 27 against Utah State.
