PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team swept Utah State 7-3, 3-2 in comeback fashion in non-conference play, Thursday. The Cougars improve to 26-16 while the Aggies drop to 4-35. The Cougars swept the season series against Utah State 5-0 and have won three consecutive games after losing five in a row.
In game one of the doubleheader, sophomore Oli Keohohou powered the Cougars to a come from behind victory with a 7th inning grand slam. The home run is her 15th of the season as she finished the game 2-2 with five RBI and three walks. The Cougars were down one run going into the seventh, but Brooke Cadiente scored on a wild pitch to tie the game before Keohohou put the game out of reach.
Senior Kari Pringle went 3-4 with two runs scored. Shortstop Kate Walker went 3-2 with a run and a walk. Sophomore Ariel Capra (9-4) got the win giving up three earned runs.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars again found themselves down one run going into the top of the seventh inning. Third baseman Megan Johnson singled to start the inning. Keohohou was intentionally walked to advance Johnson to second. Liz VanderLinded grounded out but advanced the runners. Johnson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2 with one out. Keohohou scored the winning run off an error on the pitcher to win the game and finished 2-3 with one RBI. Jill Roberts went 2-3 and scored. Cynthia Fallowfield pitched a complete game giving up only four hits while striking out three and only walking one batter.
"There is something about the seventh inning," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said referring to both come from behind victories.
BYU will play a doubleheader at Utah on Saturday at noon. The next home game for the Cougars at Gail Miller Field will be Friday, April 19th starting at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader against San Diego State. The first game will be broadcast on KBYU and BYUTV.
