LAS VEGAS -- The BYU women's softball team lost two close games Friday against No. 18 Oregon State, 3-1 and No. 5 Cal-Berkeley, 5-2 at the Desert Breeze Classic. The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3, 0-0 on the season.
In their first game in nearly two full weeks, the Cougars lost a close game to No. 18 Oregon State (9-1). BYU handed the Beavers their only loss of the season at the Thunderbird Classic on Feb. 2. Liz VanderLindon hit an inside-the-park home run for the Cougars only score. Cynthia Fallowfield (2-1) pitched well in her first loss of the season.
Playing immediately after Oregon State, the Cougars lost to No. 5 Cal 5-2. All-American Oli Keohohou hit her third home run of the season, a two-run blast, in only the sixth game of the year. Last season she hit 21 home runs, good for fourth place in the nation. Freshman Niki Andersen (0-2) picked up the loss for the Cougars in only her second collegiate start.
The Cougars will close out their play in the UNLV Classic tomorrow with No. 2 UCLA at 10 a.m. and No. 12 Nebraska at 3 p.m.

PROVO, Utah (February, 13, 2002) - The BYU women's softball team (3-1) will travel to Las Vegas this weekend in the UNLV Classic to face its toughest competition of the season. On Friday, the Cougars will play No. 18 Oregon State at 10:00 a.m. and them No. 5 Cal-Berkeley at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday BYU will face No. 2 UCLA at 10:00 a.m. and No. 12 Nebraska at 3:00 p.m.
The Cougars handed Oregon State (8-1) their only loss of the season when they faced each other two weeks ago, 4-1. All-American Oli Keohohou led the way to the upset with a two-run home run.
"We're excited to play these calibur of teams," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "Playing Top 20 teams is a good challege and measuring stick for our program this early in the season."
The Cougars will remain on the road during the Olympic break with a game against Loyola-Marymount on Feb. 20 and then the UC Santa Barbara Tournament Feb. 22-23.
