PROVO -- After waiting for three hours due to an April snowstorm, the BYU Cougars (25-8, 3-1) swept UNLV 16-25 (2-4), 9-1, 8-0 at Gail Miller Field, Thursday. BYU has now won 16 of its last 17 games. The San Diego State game scheduled for Friday has been cancelled.
In the first inning of game one with two outs, BYU hit three singles to load the bases. Freshman Ashlyn Russell hit a grand slam, the first of her career and her fifth home run of the season, to give the Cougars a quick 4-0 cushion. Sophomore Lauren Watson, senior Brooke Cadiente and freshman Ianeta Lei scored on the homer over right center field.
"My parents came up from Maui to watch me play this week and I wanted them to see me hit," Russell said of the home run.
UNLV loaded the bases in the second inning and scored a run as Lisa Moses hit an RBI single to score Jackie Kerrigan.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Russell, sophomore catcher Arron Layns, and Debbie Dodds drew walks. Sophomore Katy Barnes pinch ran for Russell and was brought home by a single from sophomore Milli Jones. All-American Oli Keohohou doubled down the right field line to clear the bases. Keohohou was brought home by a single from Watson to end the game in five innings, 9-1.
Freshman Brooke Boyce (7-1) picked up the win in three innings on the mound allowing only one hit in relief for senior Cynthia Fallowfield, who started and struck out five in the first two innings. Jackie Kerrigan (13-10) picked up the loss in four innings.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Oli Keohohou led off with a walk in the first and advanced to third on sacrifices. She was brought home by a single up the middle from senior Brooke Cadiente.
In the third inning, Keohohou hit her 14th home run of the season, a blast over the centerfield fence, and her first conference dinger of the 2003 season for a 2-0 lead.
Junior shortstop Kate Walker hit a 3 RBI double to clear the bases in the fourth inning as the Cougars took a 5-0 lead. Junior Belinda Osborn, Dodds, and Keohohou, who was intentionally walked to load the bases, scored.
Debbie Dodds brought home Lei in the fifth to increase the lead to 6-0 on an RBI single.
In the sixth inning, Watson singled to score Keohohou, who reached on a walk. Cadiente scored the final run off an RBI single to score Walker and end the game 8-0 in six innings.
Freshman Brooke Boyce (8-1) picked up her second win on the day with the shutout allowing only four hits while striking out three Rebels. UNLV's Becky McDonald dropped to 1-11 on the season.
"Boyce is incredible," head coach Gordon Eakin said of the freshman's performance. "If you can't see the fight in her eye, you don't know athletic competition."
"She pitches with an attitude," pitching coach Vaughn Alvey said.
The doubleheader schedule for Friday against league-leading San Diego State has been cancelled due to the snow received in Provo and Salt Lake, Thursday. BYU next home games are MWC doubleheaders against New Mexico and Colorado State April 25-26.

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team (23-8) will host two pivotal MWC doubleheaders as they play UNLV (16-23) on Thursday at 1:30 and league-leading San Diego State (26-14) on Friday at 1 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday but were moved up a day due to General Conference.
The Cougars defeated Utah State Tuesday in Logan behind nine home runs in the doubleheader. Oli Keohohou hit three home runs to improve her total to a league-best to 13 home runs. BYU is now a perfect 15-0 against the Aggies since the program's inception in 2000. BYU has also won 14 of its last 15 games.
The Rebels come into Provo on Thursday with a 2-2 MWC record thanks to splits with New Mexico and Colorado State over the weekend. In league play, the Rebels have a conference best 0.68 ERA. Lisa Moses boasts 10 multiple-hit games. BYU leads the all-time series 9-3 and won two games at Las Vegas during conference play last season and also eliminated the Rebels in the MWC Tournament in Provo last May. The two teams did not play in regular season action in Provo due to inclement weather last season.
San Diego State is a perfect 4-0 in conference play with weekend sweeps over New Mexico and Colorado State over the weekend. All four wins were tough ones decided by two runs or less. The Aztecs boast this week's MWC Player and Pitcher of the Week in Jacque Vaca and Celena Vasquez, a freshman right-hander. The Aztec rotation also boast last year's MWC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Bre DeSanta. San Diego State has won six straight, including a sweep over No. 22 Oregon State last week.
The Aztecs have a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series and won four out of five games over the Cougars last season, including a 10-4 win in the MWC Tournament that ended the Cougar's season.
As a team, BYU leads the conference in several offensive categories including batting average (.292), runs scored (180), doubles (37), triples (11), home runs (38), RBI, (156), slugging percentage (.509), walks (121), and total bases (405).
All-American Oli Keohohou leads the conference in several categories including batting average (.447), runs scored (36), total bases (89), slugging percentage (1.047), triples (3), walks (28), on base percentage (.583), RBI (33), and home runs (13).
Sophomore Lauren Watson is right behind her in several categories with a .388 batting average, 25 runs scored, .622 sluggins percentage, .469 on base percentage, and five home runs. Senior Brooke Cadiente has eight home runs and 28 RBI.
Live stats will be available for all games this weekend. The link is available at www.byucougars.com on the softball page under the 2003 schedule.
