ALBUQUERQUE -- For most teams, getting a split on the road in conference play is good enough. Not for the BYU women's softball team (26-9, 4-2). Playing at New Mexico (17-27-1, 2-6), the Cougars lost the first game 4-2, then won the second game of the doubleheader 5-2.

BYU has won 17 of its last 19 games, but failed to gain ground on conference leading San Diego State, Thursday.

"We want to take one game at a time,' head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We are not happy with a split on the road. We expect to win every game."

In the first at bat of the day, junior Oli Keohohou led off the game with a solo home run, her 15th of the season. Keohohou was named as one of 25 finalists for the USA Softball Player of the Year Award this week. New Mexico's Ashley VanBoxmeer responded in the bottom of the first with a home run of her own.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, senior Brooke Cadiente hit an RBI single to score Keohohou, who reached on a walk, that tied the score at two runs apiece.

New Mexico's Ashley Shartzer hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning that proved to be the game winning runs to end the game 5-2.

MWC Pitcher of the Week Brooke Boyce (8-2), a freshman right-hander, picked up only her second lost of the season giving up seven hits through six innings on the mound with no walks and two strikeouts. Amy Dumas (11-11) picked up with win through seven innings for the Lobos. The Cougars left 10 runners on base in the game.

In game two, led 1-0 after one inning as Cadiente singled to score junior Kate Walker, who reached on a single and was advanced to third thanks to a Lauren Watson double.

The Cougars tacked on three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Watson hit a solo home run, her sixth of the season. Cadiente singled to reach base and was brought home by a home run from freshman Neta Lei, her fourth of the season.

New Mexico responded in the bottom of the inning as VanBoxmeer hit a two RBI double to score Ora Hensley and Kelly Glass and close the gap to 4-2.

Keohohou did not allow the rally to phase her as she blasted a home run in the sixth inning to give the Cougars a 5-2. victory. The home run is her 16th of the season and she is only five away from tying her Cougar record of 21 she set her freshman season.

Sophomore Niki Andersen (7-3) picked up the win in a complete game four-hitter through seven innings. Amy Dumas (11-12) picked up the loss for the Lobos. BYU left 10 runners on base.

"Our bats that don't normally fail us left 10 runners on base in both games," Eakin said. "We didn't get the key hits we needed to score some more runs."

BYU will play at Colorado State on Saturday to finish the weekend. The Cougars swept the Rams last season in Fort Collins. The Cougars will next play at home the weekend of April 25-26 when they host New Mexico and Colorado State.

PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team (25-8, 3-1) will travel to New Mexico on Thursday and Colorado State on Saturday for two key conference doubleheaders this week. The Cougars have won 16 of their last 17 games and are coming off a 4-0 week.

BYU swept the Mountain West Conference awards this week as All-American Oli Keohohou and freshman Brooke Boyce were named player and pitcher of the week, respectively. Keohohou leads the conference in virtually every offensive category and is batting .449 with 14 home runs and 37 RBI. She also has a 12 game hitting streak along with 12 multiple RBI games. Boyce has an 8-1 record and picked up three wins in three appearances on the mound last week with a 2.14 ERA.

The New Mexico Lobos (16-26-1, 1-5) are led in hitting by freshman shortstop Ashley VanBoxmeer (.357), while freshman P/DP Iraine Ogas (.311) paces the team in RBI with 23. Former MWC Pitcher of the Week Amy Dumas (10-11, 1.66) leads the team in strikeouts with 143. The Lobos were swept by CSU last weekend. BYU defeated the Rams 3-2 at the New Mexico State tournament last month in a non-conference match and UNM leads the all-time series 8-7.

Colorado State is 3-3 in conference play after having won 13 straight before conference play. The Rams have a team ERA of 1.57, which currently ranks third all-time in CSU history. Steph Roberts leads the team with a .330 batting average and 10 doubles. Former MWC Player of the week Ricki Walker is just behind her with a .327 batting average and 20 RBI. BYU leads the all-time series 7-5 and the teams swept each other on the road last season including an exciting 16 inning thriller at Gail Miller Park that saw the Rams win 6-5.

BYU will remain on the road until the weekend of April 25-26 when they host New Mexico and Colorado State at home.
