ST. GEORGE -- Three BYU errors and a six-run Southern Utah outburst in the second inning was too much for the Cougars to overcome as they lost, 7-5, Friday, on the opening day of the Thunderbird Classic.
SUU's Kelly Grundy provided the big blow in the bottom half of the second inning, hitting a three-run homerun off starting pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (0-1), as the Thunderbirds scored six runs on four hits and one Cougar error.
"We had trouble fielding ground balls," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "We made too many mistakes."
The lead was cut in half when the Cougars scored three runs in their half of the fifth inning. Centerfielder Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly hit a two-run homerun after leftfielder Liz Smith had singled with two outs in the inning. Freshman Oli Keohohou reached on an error by SUU's leftfielder and advanced to second on the throw. Junior Liz Boydston doubled to left field, driving in Keohohou, closing the SUU margin to 6-3. The Thunderbirds came right back in the bottom of the fifth and scored a run to go up 7-3.
BYU narrowed the margin by scoring two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run homerun by Keohohou, but it was too late as SUU (1-0) held off the Cougars (0-1), winning 7-5.
The Thunderbird Classic continues tomorrow, with BYU taking on No. 16 Oregon State at 10 a.m., Saint Mary's at 2 p.m., and OSU again at 4 p.m.

Scouting Southern Utah
The Thunderbird Classic will be the first game of the season for Southern Utah. The Thunderbirds return six starters from last year's squad that went 23-37. SUU had a 17-9 Mid-Continent conference record, good for second place, while also going 2-2 in post-season action.
Scouting Oregon St.
16th-ranked Oregon State will also open its season against BYU. The game marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Beavers finished one game shy of the College World Series last season, losing to eventual National Champion Oklahoma in the Regional Tournament. OSU returns 12 players, including seven starters, from last year's 40-21-1 team that finished the season at No. 12.
Scouting Saint Mary's
St. Mary's comes into the tournament having already played two games. They took on San Francisco State in a doubleheader, Jan. 31, to open the season. The Gaels return just six players from last season's 24-33 squad.
Preseason Mountain West Conference Coaches' Poll
BYU was picked by the coaches in the Mountain West Conference to
finish fifth in the conference in the preseason poll released Jan. 25. In-state rival University of Utah, where BYU head coach Mary Kay Amicone played and was an assistant coach for seven years, was picked to finish first.
