ARLINGTON -- A run-scoring triple in the bottom of the seventh inning off pitcher Meghann Pricer helped the University of Texas-Arlington beat the BYU softball team, 1-0, Thursday afternoon.

Arlington third baseman Sherri Wardlow slapped a triple, knocking in freshman April Jones for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game belonged to both pitchers as Pricer (0-2) gave up six hits while striking out seven before giving up the only run of the game. UTA freshman pitcher Katy Cox (1-0) also gave up six hits but no runs while striking out 10 Cougar batters.

BYU could not manage any runs, but third baseman Liz Boydston led the Cougars, going 3-for-3, including a double. Liz Smith's single extended her hitting streak to five games as she has hit safely in all games this season. Senior Jackie Ellis had a triple while freshman Oli Keohohou also had a hit for BYU.

With the loss, BYU drops to 1-4 on the season, while the Mavericks improve to 1-0. The Cougars will participate in the Arlington/ISUZU InterCollegiate Classic tomorrow with pool play against the University of Texas-San Antonio at 9 a.m., Louisiana Tech at 11:15 a.m., and No. 2 Oklahoma at 3:45 p.m.
