TEMPE -- Solid pitching kept the BYU softball team in all three games on day one of the Louisville Slugger Classic, Friday, although all the games did not end the way the Cougars would have liked. BYU dominated Michigan State 11-1, but lost to No. 13 Iowa 8-1 and to No. 6 Arizona State 2-1.

Against Iowa, BYU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but that is all the team would get as Hawkeye pitcher Kristi Hanks silenced the Cougar bats, allowing just three hits in six innings of work. Iowa scored two runs in the third and added one more in the fifth to go up 3-1. Pitcher Meghann Pricer went four innings, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out three. Freshman Ariel Capra pitched three innings and was credited with the loss. The big blow came in the seventh inning when Alicia Gerlach hit a grand slam as the Hawkeyes went on to win 8-1.

In the second game of the day against Big-10 opponent Michigan State, pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine allowed only one run while BYU broke the offensive silence, scoring 11 runs and winning 11-1 in five innings. Freshman Oli Keohohou led the way for the Cougars with two solo homeruns, her fifth and sixth of the year while senior Jackie Ellis also drove in a run.

DeWitt-Wallentine pitched a superb game against No. 6 Arizona St., allowing only four hits in over seven innings of work. In the fifth inning, Mindy Hanson singled and moved to second on Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly's drag-bunt single. Hanson then scored on a hit by Becca Erickson to put the Cougars up 1-0. ASU tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth and the game stayed tied until the eighth inning. Using tiebreaker rules in which the last batter of the previous inning starts at second base the following inning from the eighth inning on, the Sun Devils got a run-scoring double to win the game in the eighth.

"I'm really positive about the way we played," BYU coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "You can't help but be positive when you stay with the No. 6 and No. 13 teams in the nation."

BYU's record moves to 4-9 on the year. The Louisville Slugger Classic continues tomorrow with the Cougars playing Illinois State at 9 a.m., and Iowa again at 1:30 p.m.
