SACRAMENTO -- The BYU softball team suffered two one-run defeats on the first day of the Sacramento State Capital Classic Friday, losing to No. 12 Iowa 2-1 and Texas Tech 5-4 in eight innings.

Against Iowa, a solo home run by sophomore Brooke Cadiente in the first inning gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead that they held until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Iowa's Megan Atkins had a RBI on a fielder's choice before Christina Schmaltz knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run, giving the Hawkeyes the 2-1 victory. Up until the sixth inning, pitcher Meghann Pricer gave up no runs on five hits before Iowa scored two runs on three hits in the sixth. Iowa pitcher Kristi Hanks allowed just one hit while striking out six after giving up the home run to Cadiente.

In the final game of the day Texas Tech got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the second on a two-run double by Jana Baker. In the bottom half of the inning the Cougars responded, scoring two runs of their own when Becca Erickson drew a bases-loaded walk and Angie Christiansen had a RBI-ground out to tie the game at 2-2. BYU led 4-3 going into the sixth, but the Red Raiders tied the game on a solo home run by Shauna Briggs. In the eighth-inning tiebreaker, Texas Tech got an RBI-single from Carmen Grindell to get the 5-4 win. Pitcher Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine got the loss, giving up five hits while striking out eight for the Cougars.

BYU's record moves to 11-15 on the year. The Cougars continue play Friday in the Sacramento State Capital Classic playing San Jose State at 9 a.m. and Mississippi at 11 a.m.
