SAN DIEGO -- In the first two of three games against the University of San Diego, the BYU softball team won 2-1 and 11-0 to improve to 4-2 this season.

In the first game, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead until the seventh inning. The Toreros rallied to score one, but fell short, preserving BYU's 2-1 victory. Meghann Pricer got the win to improve to 3-0 on the year, while outfielder Liz Smith went 2-for-3 to lead the Cougar effort.

The BYU bats caught on fire in the second game, and the game was called for the 10-run rule in the fifth inning to give the Cougars the 11-0 win. Ricks College transfer Maryon Dewitt earned her first Division I victory, and shortstop Becca Erickson led the Cougar assault with a three RBI triple. Erickson went 4-for-7 in both games.

"We were just pounding the ball," said BYU head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "I think we caught them off-guard. They thought it was going to be an easy three-game series and we surprised them. They're going to come back fired up tomorrow."

The Cougars will face San Diego for one more game tomorrow at noon. Lindsay Jones will get her first start as a Cougar after seeing limited relief work in BYU's first weekend of play two weeks ago.

Two weeks after kicking off its inaugural season at the Early Bird Invitational in San Jose, the BYU softball team returns to California this weekend for three games against West Coast Conference team University of San Diego. In its first weekend of Division I softball, the Cougars split four games at the San Jose State Early Bird Invitational. Saturday, the Cougars were one-hit by 12th-ranked Cal before falling in their second game to San Jose State, 6-3.

Catcher Cassie Martin, ranked third in the nation at her position by USA Toda in 1998, is still out due to recent ankle surgery and is expected to be sidelined for an additional 4-5 weeks. In her absence, junior Angie Christiansen will take over behind the plate for the Cougars.
