LAS VEGAS/SAN DIEGO -- After stealing a 4-2 come-from-behind decision at UNLV on Friday to capture its first-ever Mountain West Conference victory, the BYU women's softball team dropped three straight games over the remainder of the weekend, falling to 9-14, 1-3 on the season.
In game one, at UNLV's Rebel Diamond, UNLV held a 2-0 lead heading in to the final inning of play. In the top of the seventh, junior Tracy Farley came off the bench to drive in Jackie Ellis for the first run of the inning. The rally continued when outfielder Liz Smith picked up her team-leading second hit of the game to drive in Brooke Cadiente for the tieing run. Bryn Kreipl was also credited with an RBI during the rally, as both Cassie Martin and Farley would score for the Cougars in the top of the seventh.
Maryon Dewitt held her own in the bottom half of the inning, shutting down the Rebels to preserve the BYU victory. Dewitt went the distance, allowing just two runs on six hits. Dewitt also recorded 12 strikeouts in the Cougars' MWC debut.
In game two, the Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but this time, were unable to hold the lead as UNLV tied the score, 3-3, in the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Rebels picked up the game-winning run, preventing a two-game BYU sweep. Junior right-hander Meghann Pricer was credited with the loss, allowing just four runs on seven hits over eight innings.
With less than 24-hours rest, Dewitt threw six more innings at San Diego State on Saturday. The 5-11 right-hander allowed just four runs on eight hits, however the BYU offense was unable to produce as the Cougars dropped their second straight game. SDSU pitcher, Sandra Durazo, picked up the shutout, allowing just four hits over seven innings.
In the final game of the weekend, San Diego State picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to upend the Cougars, 5-4. Pricer was credited with the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over six complete innings.
The Cougars will travel to New Mexico and Colorado State this weekend.
Following a 1-3 stint over the weekend against Santa Clara and seventh-ranked Fresno State, the BYU softball team will begin its first-ever conference season with doubleheaders against UNLV Friday and San Diego State on Saturday. In its first season as a Division I softball team, BYU will have the distinction of playing in the inaugural Mountain West Conference softball game at noon Friday against UNLV.
Last Weekend
The Cougars concluded a tough first non-conference schedule with doubleheaders against Santa Clara and Fresno State last weekend. BYU split with the Broncos, losing 1-0 before taking a 2-0 victory in the second game. Against seventh-ranked Fresno State, both games were called early due to the mercy rule as the Cougars lost 9-0 and 12-3. BYU faced one of the most challenging non-conference schedules possible, facing five different top-15 teams in seven games.
Injury Report
Third baseman Tracy Farley experienced a broken cheekbone and orbital lobe over a month ago after being struck in the face by a ball. She will be out at least two more weeks. Megan Johnson, a freshman from Sandy, Utah, will continue at the hot corner until Farley returns to action.
