PALO ALTO -- After a rainout in the first game of the Stanford Classic against Hawai`i on Thursday, the BYU softball team (15-8) split on Friday with a close 3-2 loss to Illinois and a nice 9-5 win over UC Riverside.
Illinois, a quality team receiving votes in the top-25, came out strong in game one against BYU to take a three-run lead after the bottom of the second inning.
The Fighting Illini held the Cougar offense scoreless until they made a rally in the top of the seventh inning led by senior second baseman Kate Walker.
Walker started the inning off with a single through the left side. A pop fly followed to left field to give the Cougars one out. Freshman shortstop Jodi Norton then launched her second home run of the season to bring the Cougars within a run, but that was the closest BYU got.
The game ended after the top of the seventh inning giving Illinois the 3-2 victory.
Illinois pitcher Amanda Fortune (12-5) got the win, while BYU pitcher Brooke Boyce (4-4) received the loss pitching the complete six innings.
In game two, the third match up of the season against UCR, the Highlanders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning.
The Cougars capitalized on a Highlander error at shortstop to score Le`i (who previously doubled) for the first run of the game in the top of the second.
BYU would score three more runs off of three hits in the top of the third inning to take a two run lead. Jennifer Whiteley, Norton and Lauren Watson contributed to the three Cougar hits.
UCR would put another run on the board in the bottom of the third inning to put the Cougars up by only a run.
The Cougars would have another big three-run inning in the top of the fifth inning to take the 7-3 advantage.
Norton started off with a home run to left field, marking back-to-back games with a homer. Lindsey Gerhauser followed with her first extra-base double of the year to centerfield. Le`i was walked and Watson singled up the middle to score Gerhauser. After a Highlander pitching change, Ashlyn Russell reached on a fielder's choice getting Watson out at second, but scoring Le`i for the third run of the inning.
BYU would add a run a piece in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
A single from Norton brought in Chamberlain in the sixth and Debbie Dodds' solo home run was the Cougars' ninth run.
UCR tried to rally back from its six run deficit, but were only able to gather two runs in their 9-5 loss.
Cougar pitcher Brooke Boyce pitched 6.2 innings for the pitching staff, relieving Ariel Capra who got down early by two runs in the first inning. Boyce got the win to improve her record to 5-4.
BYU will play two more games on Saturday against Hawai`i (rescheduled from Thursday's rain out) at 10 a.m. PT (11 a.m. MT) and No. 12 Stanford at 4 p.m. PT (5 p.m. MT) to finish out the Stanford Classic.
