STANFORD -- On a rainy and cold morning BYU's bats were anything but cold as the Cougars blasted Miami (Ohio), 10-0, in five innings at the Stanford Classic.
"It was another very encouraging game," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We played a strong game and look to do the same against some tough opponents Saturday."
Ianeta Le`i led BYU from the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. The Cougars scored six runs in the first inning and coasted to the easy victory.
BYU, now 16-5 has now won six in a row. Four of the Cougars last six victories have been shutouts and three have finished after five innings due to the eight run rule. BYU's nightcap against Pacific was cancelled due to rain. The game will not be made up.
Summer Tobias showed another strong effort from the mound to earn the shut-out victory. Tobias only gave up three hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Cougars got an early start on the Red Hawks when Andrea Ramirez led the game off with a single and Monica Gonzales drew a walk to bring Le`i to the plate with two on and no outs. Le`i crushed a three-run homer to left center to start the six-run inning. Later in the first Daniella Urincho came up with a two-run single.
BYU scored in each of the first four innings. The Cougars scored one run in the second and fourth innings while adding two runs in the third frame.
Weather permitting, BYU returns to action Saturday with a 10 a.m. (MST) contest with Wisconsin before taking on No. 5 Stanford at 4 p.m.

PROVO -- After an offensive outburst that led to a Texas A&M Invitational Championship, the BYU softball team looks to continue its success at the Stanford Classic.
The Cougars, now 14-5, outscored their opponents 37-8 while going 4-1 in the tournament held in College Station, Texas. After losing the first game of the tournament, 3-2, in heartbreaking fashion to 14th-ranked tournament host, BYU bounced back with two consecutive wins by the eight-run rule.
This week, BYU will try to keep its winning ways going when it squares off against three teams that the Cougars have never faced. BYU will get its first shot at Middle Tennessee State (6-14-1), Miami (Ohio) (12-8) and Wisconsin (4-6). The Cougars will also play Pacific (8-8) and No. 5 Stanford (17-4).
"Our bats obviously came alive this weekend," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said last week of the Cougars' offensive production.
BYU will look to extend its season-high win streak of four games. The Cougars start the tournament playing MTSU Thursday at 2 p.m. (MST) before finishing the tournament with a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
