Russell's Slam Salvages Split

Image

EUGENE -- Ashlyn Russell came up clutch for BYU, nailing a grand slam in the seventh inning of the second game of a double header against No. 22 DePaul as the Cougars earned a split.

BYU (18-7) lost game one, 4-2, before winning in come-from-behind fashion, 7-5, in the second game.

In the first game, the Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Cortney Nix laced a RBI single to score Stephanie Platt. The one run held until the top of the sixth when the Blue Demons exploded for six hits. The big blow came with bases loaded on a bases-clearing double.

The Cougars had their chances late in the game. BYU's Jodi Norton connected with a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases but were unable to get any runs and the score stuck.

In game two BYU out hit DePaul 12-4. The Blue Demons struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on an unearned run. The Cougars tied the score on a RBI double by Andrea Ramirez in the third. Ramirez added another run-scoring double in the fifth and Norton came up with a RBI single in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the six, DePaul cashed in two unearned runs to retake a 5-3 lead. In the top of the seventh the Cougars started to roll. BYU opened the inning with a double and two singles to load the bases with nobody out. Russell promptly cleared the bases with one swing of the bat on the Cougars' first grand slam of the season.

BYU takes on host-school Oregon in a Friday twinbill. Start times are 3 and 5 p.m. (MST)

Oregon Trip Last Before Homestand

Image

PROVO -- In the final week before Mountain West Conference play begins, BYU heads to Oregon to compete in perhaps its toughest road trip of the season.

The Cougars (17-6) will play six games against four teams--three of which were ranked in the USA Softball/ESPN.com preseason Top-25. BYU will also be looking for a better showing than a similar trip to Oregon last season where the Cougars went 1-5.

Play starts for BYU Thursday afternoon when the Cougars face No. 22 DePaul in a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. (PST). Friday, BYU will play a twinbill against Oregon with the same start times. The Cougars first four games will be played in Eugene, Ore.

BYU will then make the short trip to Corvallis, Ore. to take on Akron and No. 8 Oregon State on Saturday. Game times are projected for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. The Beavers are one of the hottest teams in Division I softball, having won their last 21 games.

The Cougars, who were idle last week, will use the Oregon trip as their final tune up before MWC play begins on March 30 at home against UNLV.
