PROVO -- Coming off its longest losing streak of the year, BYU started Mountain West Conference play in style, blasting UNLV 13-7 and 9-1.

The Cougars, now 20-10 (2-0, MWC) exploded for a combined 22 runs on 25 hits including five home runs. BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said the offensive output is what he has been expecting all year.

"We've been on the road for the last seven weeks and were a little road weary," Eakin said of the Cougars opening their season with 28 consecutive games on the road. "This team is very capable of putting up big offensive numbers. If we hit like we did tonight, I think we are unbeatable."

BYU wasted no time in game one, putting up eight runs on the Rebels in the first two innings. The Cougars got a two-run single from Paige Paramore in the bottom of the first to start the scoring parade.

In the second, Cortney Nix hit the first of three BYU homers, a three-run shot to left center. Down 8-1, UNLV scored five unanswered runs.

Just as the Rebels began to close the gap, the Cougars came roaring back. Jodi Norton and Ianeta Le`i hit homers. Le`i's blast was easily cleared the flag pole in left-center field.

"Neta's home run is the deepest I've seen in as a softball coach," Eakin said.

In game two, BYU pitcher Daniela Urincho stymied the Rebel hitters, limiting them to just three hits on one unearned run.

The Cougar bats got off to a slow start as UNLV pitcher Shannon Crisp kept BYU in check through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Le`i and Norton each picked up a three-run round-tripper breaking the game open.

Emi Snow's walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the sixth gave BYU the twinbill sweep. The Cougars second win came by virtue of the mercy rule.

Friday BYU continues its homestand when it welcomes conference foe San Diego State to Gail Miller Field for a double header. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.

PROVO -- Mountain West Conference play opens this week when BYU plays UNLV and San Diego State in its home opener at Gail Miller Field beginning Thursday.

The Cougars (18-10, 0-0 MWC) will play doubleheaders with the Rebels on Thursday and the Aztecs Friday. Both twinbills start at 5 p.m.

BYU is coming off its toughest road trip of the season. The Cougars went 1-4 last week playing against two ranked squads in Oregon.

BYU has won eight consecutive MWC games dating back to last season. The Cougars are the reigning MWC regular season and tournament champions.

Friday's 5 p.m. contest with SDSU will be televised on BYU TV with veteran broadcasters Jay Monson and Gary Sheide providing commentary.
