OREM -- The final week of BYU's 2006 regular season began with its first loss in program history to Utah Valley State, 3-1, at Wolverine Field.
The Cougars, now 36-18, only mustered four hits as the Wolverines pitcher Jackie Roberts kept BYU hitters off balance all game. Roberts pitched a no hitter through 3.2 innings before Ashlyn Russell got a two-out single in the fourth.
Utah Valley started the scoring in the first. Cari Hamilton picked up a one-out single and was followed by a two-run home run by Rachel Hargrove.
Pitching dominated the middle innings as Roberts yielded only one unearned run. The Cougars run came in the fifth inning when Jodi Norton and Jennifer Whiteley each got aboard on a pair of errors. Freshman Andi ripped a RBI single to cut the Wolverines lead to 3-1.
After Monica Gonzales reached on an infield single to load the bases, Roberts got BYU star Ianeta Le`i to hit into an inning ending fielders choice to end the scoring threat. Roberts retired the next six batters to pick up the victory.
BYU wraps up its regular season on the road when it heads to San Diego and Las Vegas. The Cougars play in San Diego Thursday at 7 p.m. (PDT)
