PALM SPRINGS, Calif., (Feb. 22, 2007) -- BYU's (8-4) three-game winning streak came to an end, as the Cougars committed a combined 11 errors in both of its losses to Loyola Marymount and Virginia on day one of the Palm Springs Classic.
Loyola Marymount avenged a loss earlier in the season to BYU by beating the Cougars 8-3. The Lions took a 4-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning and capitalized on two BYU errors in the inning by scoring four runs to put the game out of reach. Dani Urincho went 3-for-4 and Tracee Hoch went 2-for-3, as the two combined for five of the Cougars' seven hits. However, the team committed a total of six errors in the game.
Virginia took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Cougars answered back with three runs of their own. Jodi Norton hit a one-out single up the middle, allowing Emi Snow to score from second base. Freshman Angeline Quiocho stepped up to the plate next and swatted a home run to left center that evened the score.
The Cavaliers recaptured the lead in the fourth inning on a Casey Steffan unearned run. In the fifth inning, Lindsey Preuss drove in Amy McKean and sent Sarah Tacke to third. A Cougar error placed Preuss at second to end the play. The next batter, Michelle Salmiery, hit one down the left field line scoring the two runners and giving Virginia a four-run cushion.
It would prove to be a deciding cushion, as Hoch's two-run homer in the sixth that drove in Quiocho was not enough to get BYU back in the game. Virginia won 7-5.
The Cougars play another double-header Friday, facing No. 12 Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. PST and Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. The early game will be available through live audio, and the Ohio State game will be available via livestats.

PROVO -- The BYU softball team (8-2) heads to California for the Palm Springs Classic on the heels of a three-game winning streak.
The Cougars, who beat No. 7 Oregon State last week, will try their hand at another ranked team this weekend in 2006 National Champion runner-up and now No. 12 Northwestern. However, BYU head coach Gordon Eakin says his team is not placing any extra emphasis on the matchup.
"We focus on what we need to do, not on who we're playing," Eakin said. "We need to execute the bunt better to move runners into scoring position. We need to continue to play with confidence. So far we've been pretty pleased, but we just need to continue to play with composure and confidence."
Junior outfielder Emi Snow, who was named Mountain West Conference Softball Player of the Week, hit .294 and drove in six RBI while posting a .824 slugging percentage at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic last week. Eakin said Snow has done a great job of quietly contributing to the team's success.
"Emi is a very clutch player," Eakin said. "She just goes about her work and gets the job done."
BYU faces Loyola Marymount for the second time this season on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PST, and then play against Virginia at 8:30 p.m. Friday brings another double-header, as the Cougars play No. 12 Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. and Ohio State at 5:30 p.m.
Illinois-Chicago will be the final team BYU meets at the Palm Springs Classic. The two teams are scheduled to play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Games against Virginia and Ohio State will be available via livestats, while Northwestern will provide live audio.
