Norton Hits Two Home Runs, BYU Beats Utah 6-0

Image

SALT LAKE -- Senior Jodi Norton hit two home runs to lead BYU (22-16, 3-2) in its 6-0 win over rival University of Utah (20-16-1, 1-4) at Ute Field on Friday.

"Everybody stepped up and played well today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We had nice intensity and good energy. It was a good team win."

Norton broke up a scoreless game with a lead-off home run to center field in the fourth inning. The hit was Norton's second of the day. After Emi Snow struck out swinging, sophomore Andi Ramirez sent one deep to right center for another solo homer and a 2-0 Cougar lead.

"[Norton] has stepped up the last five or six games," Eakin said. "I've noticed a definite difference in her. She's leading the team and having quality at-bats. She did it again today."

Freshman Angeline Quiocho followed suit in the fifth inning with a lead-off smash to left field that put BYU ahead 3-0. The Walnut, California native has five home runs on the season. After Cortney Nix-Clark drew a walk, Jennifer Whiteley reached on a fielder's choice. Nix-Clark was able to take second base safely thanks to an error by Utah second baseman Kristie Keller.

The plays set the stage for Norton's third at-bat, which turned out to be a strike out. But a passed ball allowed both Nix-Clark and Whiteley to get into scoring position. Utah pitcher Meghan Dyer then threw a wild pitch to score Nix-Clark for BYU's fourth run of the day.

With Whiteley on first in the seventh inning, Norton swatted her 12th home run of the season, once again to center field, for the 6-0 final. Norton finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

Freshman Christie Zinanti got the shutout victory, allowing just three hits and putting away 19 of the 25 batters she faced. Zinanti did not give up a single hit after the third inning.

"Christie has been very solid on the mound for us for the last month," Eakin said. "She threw a great game today. I'm thrilled with the way she's throwing, and I'm glad she's a freshman."

BYU meets Utah Saturday at 1 p.m. (MST) at Ute Field.

In-State Softball Rivalries Rekindle This Week

Image

PROVO -- The BYU softball team (20-16, 2-2) will host cross-town rival Utah Valley State College (14-21) on Tuesday and then head north to take on its biggest rival of all, University of Utah (20-15-1, 1-3), for a weekend series.

The Cougars and Wolverines will play their fifth overall match at Gail Miller Field at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. BYU has never lost a regular-season home game to UVSC.

"It's become a little bit of a local rivalry," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We always have good, intense games against UVSC. They're a scrappy team, and we expect tough competition each time we play them."

Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., BYU will play Mountain West Conference-foe University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The Cougars are looking to add to their 20-15 all-time advantage over the Utes as well as avenge their two losses at Ute Field last season.

"We've had good success over Utah over the last three years," Eakin said. "They have great pitching. I think if we can be patient and get to their pitching, we'll be successful this weekend."

Fans can see BYU in action against UVSC live by purchasing tickets at the ticket office at the entrance of Miller Park. All games this week will be available through live stats.
