Urincho-Snow Hits Grand Slam in Win

Image

OREM -- BYU (38-17, 13-3) completed the season sweep of Utah Valley State (23-29) with a 6-3 victory Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the win, BYU head coach Gordon Eakin was displeased with the team's effort and blamed himself for the lack of focus.

"We anticipated a battle," Eakin said. "You have to give credit to [Utah Valley pitcher] Jackie [Roberts] and their team, but we were looking past them to this weekend. That's probably my fault because we've been focusing on UNLV and a potential conference championship. We won't make that mistake again."

Dani Urincho-Snow hit a grand slam in the top of the first to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead. The hit was Urincho-Snow's first career grand slam. The Wolverines got two back in the bottom of the order thanks to an RBI-single by Cherylyn McGraw and a steal of home base by Cari Hamilton.

BYU added to its lead in the fifth when Emi Snow came to bat with runners on first and second. The junior smacked a double to left field bringing in Cortney Nix-Clark for the 5-2 lead. Andrea Ramirez then drove in Jodi Norton giving the Cougars a 6-2 advantage after five innings of play.

Utah Valley would score one more in the final inning for the 6-3 final, BYU's 38th win of the season. Urincho-Snow improved to 6-2 with the complete game victory, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs.

The Cougars finish up the regular season with four home games. First up is a double-header against UNLV on Thursday at 6 p.m. (MST) and 8 p.m. The 6 p.m. game will be broadcast on CSTV.

Conference Championship In Sight

Image

PROVO -- After seeing its 16-game winning streak come to an end last weekend, BYU (37-17, 13-3) will try to improve on another streak.

The Cougars are 12-0 at home and finish out the regular season this week with four straight games at Gail Miller Field. The team will attempt to do something that has never been done in the program's history and that is to finish a season with an undefeated home record.

"The fact that we're undefeated at home is nice," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "But, we just focus on getting better every day and what we have to do to be successful in our game. Hopefully at the end we'll be undefeated at home, but we need to focus on one game at a time in order to have a chance to get there."

BYU is also holding on to a three-game lead over UNLV in the Mountain West Conference standings. Any combination of two Cougar wins and Rebel losses (in conference-play) this week will ensure BYU's first conference championship since 2005 and third overall.

First, BYU will look to complete its season sweep of cross-town rival Utah Valley State (23-28) in Orem on Tuesday. The first pitch will be thrown at 4 p.m. (MST).

Thursday the Cougars begin their final home stand in a double-header against UNLV (35-25, 10-6) at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The first game will be shown live on CSTV, while both games will be available through live stats and/or live video. The Rebels swept BYU in Las Vegas last month.

BYU hosts San Diego State (30-22, 6-10) on Friday and Saturday to end the regular season. Friday's game will begin at 6 p.m., and Saturday's contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start time. Both games will be available via live stats and live video.

Saturday will be Senior Day at Gail Miller Field. A ceremony honoring the Cougars' four departing seniors will be held directly after the game.
