Cougars Drop Two on the Road in Arizona

Image

TEMPE -- For the third and fourth times this season, BYU (15-13) found itself heading into the second inning trailing by four or more runs, as the Cougars lost to Illinois (18-10), 10-2, and to No. 7 Arizona State (30-7), 8-1, Friday at the Diamond Devil Invitational.

Makenzie Smith put the Illini on top with a grand slam in the top of the first with no outs. Cougars' pitcher Christina Gwyn recovered from the early setback by putting away the next two batters. However, Molly Lawhead did a little more damage to BYU before the inning was over with a solo home run to center field. After Gwyn recorded the third out, the Cougars' bats were sat down in order.

BYU head coach Gordon Eakin replaced Gwyn with freshman Christie Zinanti after Gwyn walked the lead-off batter to start the second inning. The change didn't affect Illinois, as Shanna Diller stepped up to the plate and swatted her team's third home run of the day for the 7-0 advantage.

Freshman Angeline Quiocho got onto the base pads with a lead-off single to left field in the bottom of the second. Illini pitcher Vicky Brown then hit Emi Snow with a pitch, moving Quiocho into scoring position. Two batters later senior Tracee Hoch singled to left field, bringing Quiocho in for the score.

It was Quiocho once again who had a hand in the Cougars' scoring in the bottom of the third when the Walnut, California native sent a single to center field, driving in Jennifer Whiteley. The 7-2 score would be as close as BYU got, as Illinois senior Sydney Lisy homered to left center in the fifth inning. Later in the fifth, with bases loaded, catcher Lana Armstrong hit a two-RBI single up the middle for the early 10-2 final.

Bianca Cruz hit a three-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning for Arizona State, and two batters later Mindy Cowles hit a home run to right center to give BYU another five-run deficit heading into the second inning.

The Sun Devils chalked up a few more runs with Caylyn Carlson's solo swat to center field in the third inning and two one RBI-singles from Carlson and Kaitlin Cochran in the fourth.

Arizona State junior Katie Burkhardt was working on a no-hitter until Snow hit a one-out solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth. Burkhardt had retired nine straight batters to that point.

BYU finishes the Diamond Devil Invitational with another double-header on Saturday. The Cougars meet Illinois at 11:30 a.m. (MST) and Longwood at 2 p.m.

Diamond Devil Invitational Last of Road Tournaments

Image

PROVO -- The Diamond Devil Invitational will be the last of six road tournaments the BYU softball team (15-11) has played in to begin the 2007 season.

The Cougars travel to Tempe, Arizona where they will face host school and No. 7 team in the nation Arizona State (29-5), Illinois (16-9) and Longwood (10-5). Coming off two big wins against Mercer and Santa Clara to end last week's Capital Classic in Sacramento, California, the team is looking to build on its winning streak as it looks ahead to its home and conference schedules.

"The way we won [against Santa Clara last weekend], I think, is a building block to gaining momentum towards the rest of the season," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We showed a lot of heart. That's something that we haven't put together lately, but we're so capable of doing."

BYU meets Arizona State on Thursday at 7 p.m. (PST) in a preliminary match to the Diamond Devil Invitational. The Invitational kicks off with the Cougars going up against Illinois on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and ASU at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, BYU meets Illinois once again at 11:30 a.m. and finishes the tournament against Longwood at 2 p.m.

Every game except the last against Longwood will be available through livestats.

Also, because Arizona does not participate in daylight-saving time, all games will be an hour earlier than normal Mountain Standard Time.
