Cougars Rout Utes Behind 12 Hits, 11 Runs

SALT LAKE -- Senior Jodi Norton had another two-home run game, as BYU (23-16, 4-2) completed its sweep of the University of Utah (20-17-1, 1-5) 11-2 at Ute Field on Saturday.

The Cougars picked up where they left off on Friday, as Cortney Nix-Clark crushed a home run to right field in the game's first at-bat. Two batters later, Jodi Norton hit her third home run in two days giving BYU a 2-0 lead heading into the second inning.

"We definitely had veteran leadership today," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Cortney leads off with a home run, and that was a huge tone-setter for the game. Jodi had two home runs again, and Tracee [Hoch] made some really nice plays defensively. We had really good senior leadership and excellent pitching again today."

In the second inning, it was Nix-Clark again notching runs on the scoreboard. With Hoch and Angeline Quiocho on base, Nix-Clark smacked a two-RBI double down the left field line. The Utes scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 4-1.

Norton ended her week with another solo home run in the fifth inning and Nix-Clark hit another two-RBI double in the fifth. Four unearned runs from Nix-Clark, Quiocho, Jennifer Whiteley and Monica Gonzales in the final two innings gave the Cougars the 11-2 win and a series sweep over Utah.

Junior Christina Gwyn struck out five and allowed just one earned run on the day.

Next up for BYU is a make-up double-header against Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah. The two teams meet on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (MST) and 3 p.m.

In-State Softball Rivalries Rekindle This Week

Image

PROVO -- The BYU softball team (20-16, 2-2) will host cross-town rival Utah Valley State College (14-21) on Tuesday and then head north to take on its biggest rival of all, University of Utah (20-15-1, 1-3), for a weekend series.

The Cougars and Wolverines will play their fifth overall match at Gail Miller Field at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. BYU has never lost a regular-season home game to UVSC.

"It's become a little bit of a local rivalry," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We always have good, intense games against UVSC. They're a scrappy team, and we expect tough competition each time we play them."

Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., BYU will play Mountain West Conference-foe University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The Cougars are looking to add to their 20-15 all-time advantage over the Utes as well as avenge their two losses at Ute Field last season.

"We've had good success over Utah over the last three years," Eakin said. "They have great pitching. I think if we can be patient and get to their pitching, we'll be successful this weekend."

Fans can see BYU in action against UVSC live by purchasing tickets at the ticket office at the entrance of Miller Park. All games this week will be available through live stats.
