PROVO -- BYU (29-16, 8-2) extended its winning streak to nine games Saturday afternoon with a 6-5 victory over New Mexico (14-16, 4-3).
The win marks BYU's 14th straight win over the Lobos dating back to the 2004 season.
"This win is a huge builder for us," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It shows we can win with our speed and our never die attitude. It's a great position to be in with an 8-2 record heading into the second half of conference play."
Like the night before, New Mexico got off to a fast start taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first. Amy Ray hit the two-run home run that gave the Lobos the early lead. Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Analise Rubalcava put another one up for New Mexico in the third, a solo shot to left field that made it a 3-0 game.
The Cougars got on the board in the third when Andrea Ramirez hit a two-out double to score Jodi Norton. However, BYU's comeback would have to wait as Katie Gilmore's RBI-single in the fifth brought the Lobos' lead back to three. Dani Urincho-Snow walked in New Mexico's fifth and final run in the sixth.
Needing four runs to force extra innings, the Cougars worked themselves into a two-on-and-one-out situation in the bottom of the seventh. With runners at the corners, Ramirez cranked one out of the park to bring BYU within one run. After Urincho-Snow grounded out, Tracee Hoch reached on a fielding error by the Lobos' second baseman. Quiocho singled to keep the rally alive, and then Monica Gonzales loaded up the bases for Nix-Clark on a fielder's choice.
Nix-Clark delivered with a fielder's choice single. Quiocho beat the tag at third to allow Hoch to score the tying run. The play set the stage for the game's final at-bat. Senior Jennifer Whiteley took a full-count pitch into shallow right field for the game-winning RBI.
"The seventh inning was one of the funnest I've ever been involved with," Eakin said. "We said in the sixth inning that we weren't going to quit, and I think the girls took me seriously."
BYU stays home for a double-header on Tuesday, April 24, against Southern Utah. Game times are set for 3 p.m. (MST) and 5 p.m.

PROVO -- BYU (23-16, 4-2) will make up a postponed double-header against Southern Utah (18-22) in Cedar City, Utah on Tuesday then return to Provo for four consecutive home games.
Colorado State (23-20, 2-2) comes to Gail Miller Field for a nationally televised double-header on Thursday, while a weekend series against visiting New Mexico (12-14, 2-1) rounds out the week for BYU. With four Mountain West Conference games on their immediate calendar, the Cougars have a chance to gain some ground on MWC-leader UNLV. BYU head coach Gordon Eakin says his team needs to take care of business at home in order to do that.
"I feel very good about where we sit in the conference right now based on the fact we've been on the road the first six conference games," Eakin said. "We've gotten the pre-season first and second team picks and our arch rival all out of the way and all on the road, and we're still 4-2. I'm optimistic that we're positioned right where we want to be."
Fans can see the Cougars live in four of their six games this week at Gail Miller Field by purchasing tickets at the ticket office at the entrance of Miller Park. The Mtn. will broadcast Thursday's double-header against Colorado State, while all games except the SUU double-header will be available through live stats and/or live video.
