LAS -- In five cold and windy innings the BYU women's softball defeated Northwestern State 14-0, at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Thursday, in Las Vegas. BYU remains undefeated with a 6-0 record, while NSU is now 0-3 on the season.

The Cougars recorded 14 hits, including four doubles and one home run. They were led by Dani Snow who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI, and by freshman Jessica Purcell who also went 2-for-3, including a three-run homer.

Freshman pitcher Paige Affleck's complete game performance gave her another win. She leads the team with three wins. Affleck gave up one hit during five innings and struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced.

"The weather was windy and cold, so I'm really proud of the girls for battling through the elements," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We came out extremely strong and never let the other team have a chance to come back."

Purcell started out the Cougars' hitting rally in the first inning with a three-run homer over the center field wall. It is her second home run and seventh RBI on the season.

Another freshman, Caschjen Davis, scored two more runs for the Cougars with a single to left field to bring in Angeline Quiocho from second and Snow from third.

Dixie State transfer Amanda Vance and Junior Monica Gonzales each claimed a RBI to end the first inning with a 7-0.

After finishing the top of the second inning by retiring three straight Northwestern State batters, the second inning became a similar story for BYU.

Purcell doubled and was brought in by a double from Snow. Then, a double from Quiocho brought in Snow from second base.

When the score was 9-0, Leigh Appenfeller came in for NSU to relieve Sara Domelas. Appenfeller walked three straight batters to bring in two more runs for the Cougars.

Gonzales' at-bat brought in Stephanie Platt Hopkins from third, and another walk brought in a run. Purcell and Emi Snow Willing, both fouled out the end the second inning 12-0.

NSU got on base for the first time during the fourth inning when Carly Bruno reached first. She struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Bruno stole second but was left on base when Affleck retired the next two batters.

NSU walked in another Cougar run during the fourth inning. A single by Whitney Nix brought in Gonzales and extended BYU's lead to 14-0 before the end of the inning.

Hopes for Affleck's first no-hitter ended in the fifth inning when NSU singled with one out, but BYU ended the inning before allowing any damage.

With the Cougars' 14-0 lead, the NCAA eight-run rule was applied after the fifth inning.

BYU continues play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Friday against No. 9 Oklahoma and against Missouri, at noon and 3 p.m. PST, respectively.

Cougs Face No. 9 at Louisville Slugger Classic

Image

PROVO -- After finishing its first tournament 5-0, the BYU women's softball team heads to Las Vegas to compete in the 2008 Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Feb. 14-16.

The Cougars will face Northwestern State on Thursday at 5 p.m. for their first contest of the Tournament. On Friday at noon, they will play No. 9 Oklahoma, who is 3-2 on the season. The Cougs then play 3-2 Missouri at 3 p.m.

During its final day at the Tournament, BYU faces Kansas at 9 a.m. and San Jose State at noon. Kansas is 5-1 on the season, while San Jose State is 1-3.

Oklahoma will be the first time the Cougars have faced a top-10 team this season. The Sooners finished last season ranked No. 9, and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.

The competitive opponent will be a big test for the young BYU team, which has only three seniors and three juniors.

While the Cougars are a young team, they are led by the offensive power of sophomore Angeline Quiocho, who has nine hits and four homeruns.

Hurlers Christie Zinanti and Christina Gwyn Trice provide experience and skill from the circle. Zinanti has maintained a .000 ERA in the 10 innings she has pitched this year, while Gwyn Trice lead the Cougars with 23 strike outs in 12 innings.
