Split After Rain Delay

Image

KNOXVILLE -- With a 4-2 loss to Louisiana-Monroe and a 10-0 win against Wagner in the Tennessee Classic at Lee Softball Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., the BYU women's softball team advances to an 8-5 record.

The Cougars were originally scheduled to play ULM at 10 a.m. directly followed by a game against Virginia, but due to rain delay game times were pushed back to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., against Wagner instead of Virginia.

BYU took a heavy blow against ULM when the Cougars suffered their fourth loss in a row. Centerfielder Monica Gonzales and shortstop Amanda Vance both went 2-3 during the Cougars' first game.

After a scoreless first inning, BYU took the lead in the top of the second inning. Angeline Quiocho led off with a walk, and with two outs Caschjen Davis drilled a base hit to left field to score Quiocho for the lead.

ULM evened the score, 1-1, during the bottom of the second with a solo-shot off the Lee Stadium scoreboard.

BYU hurler Christie Zinanti walked three batters in four plate appearances to load the bases. A single up the middle allowed two runs to score, giving ULM a 3-1 lead. With runners on the corners, a stolen base attempt caused a first to second rundown and allowed the runner from third to score and extended BYU's deficit, 4-1.

A double to the left field wall from Vance mounted a BYU scoring threat. Monica Gonzales reached first with a hit to left field and put runners on first and third, but a hard shot from Kristin Delahoussaye knocked down by the pitcher forced the Cougars' opportunity to end.

In the top of the seventh, lead-off batter Davis walked, as did Erin Olander. With two runners on Gonzales singled to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Davis home and another walk loaded the bases. Jessica Purcell struck out and brought up BYU's leading slugger Quiocho. She lined out to the shortstop to end the game at 4-2.

The loss marked the end of Quiocho's 11-game hitting streak, and the end of BYU's 10-game home run streak. Quiocho is the nation's leading home run hitter with eight home runs on the season.

Zinanti received the loss for the Cougars and is now 2-3. She gave up three hits and six walks to allow four runs.

The Cougars came back in the following game against Wagner, with an eight-run rule, 10-0 game. Wagner is now 0-1 on the season.

Paige Affleck received the win for BYU and improved to 4-1. During the shut out, she struck out seven batters and allowed three hits.

BYU's offense came alive during the game with 12 hits, including two for Davis, Quiocho, Vance and Olander. Whitney Nix recorded her first home run of the year.

BYU took its lead in the first inning when Daniela Snow singled up the middle to bring in Davis from second. After the Seahawks recorded their first out, Quiocho reached first base on a fielder's choice from the pitcher to second base that forced Snow out. Quiocho stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch but Wagner forced another out to end the inning with the Cougars leading 1-0.

A big second inning propelled BYU to a 7-0 lead that Wagner would never make up. Gonzales recorded an RBI with a single, and a third base error allowed Snow to reach first and two unearned runs to score. Quiocho singled, driving in another run for BYU and a two RBI double from Amanda Vance topped off the Cougars' scoring rally.

In the third inning a two-run bomb from Nix advanced BYU's lead, 9-0. During the fourth inning Quiocho doubled and was brought home off of Brittany Tokunaga's at-bat.

In the top of the fifth inning, Wagner received its final chance to come back but was unable to do so with three ground-out plays to the pitcher.

The Cougars play Virginia at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Due to the rain delays, BYU's second game against No. 5 Tennessee is cancelled. Live stats of the Cougs final game at the Tennessee Classic is available at www.byucougars.com.
