KNOXVILLE -- Led by first baseman Dani Snow, the BYU women's softball team defeated Virginia, 5-1, at the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville Tenn., Saturday. With the win, the Cougars advance to a 9-5 record.
BYU belted 10 hits against Virginia, its fourth double-digit hit game this season. Snow went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a double. The two hits extended her current hitting streak to 10 games. Angeline Quiocho went 2-for 4, marking her seventh multiple hit game this season.
Christina Gwyn Trice, 3-1, recorded her third win of the season and her third complete game. She struck out 12 batters and gave up four hits.
"We played a lot better today," BYU head Coach Gordon Eakin said. "Christina pitched a good game and we were better offensively."
After a quite first inning, BYU left two runners in scoring position during the second inning. Snow doubled to left field and Jessica Purcell reached first off of a fielding error. Virginia retired three consecutive batters to end the inning with two runners on.
The Cougars broke the deadlock in the third inning. Quiocho singled to right field and Monica Gonzales reached first on a fielding error. Emi Snow Willing singled to load the bases and a walk awarded Snow a base, and brought in Quiocho. Purcell grounded out to second but got an RBI when Gonzales reached home.
In the top of the fifth inning Virginia evened the score, 2-1, when two walks put runners on first a second and an infield single loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed runners to advance and allowed Virginia to score. With two runners in scoring position and two outs a routine ground ball to third base ended the Virginia offensive threat.
During BYU's next at-bat the Cougars increased their lead, 4-1, when Snow homered to add two more runs. Two more singles followed, but both runners were left on base at the close of the inning.
Kristin Delahoussaye doubled down the left field line, advanced to third off a single from Quiocho and scored on a throwing error to make the score 5-1.
In the seventh inning Gwyn Trice walked the lead-off batter and another single put runners on first and second. The lead runner was tagged out during a fielder's choice and a pop fly ended the game, leaving two runners on.
Coming off two wins, the Cougars head to Arizona to play in the Arizona State Tournament Feb. 29. They face Drake, Creighton and No. 2 Arizona State.
