Splitting against No. 3 and Illinois

Image

COLLEGE STATION -- After a weather-related game cancellation Thursday at the 008 Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas, the BYU women's softball team dominated over Illinois with at 10-0 and fell to No. 3 Texas A&M, 3-1, Friday. The Cougars advance to a 12-8 record.

Senior first baseman Dani Snow, who went 5-for-7 including five RBI, led BYU. Snow hit a three-run bomb during the Cougars shut-out performance against Illinois.

Hurler and fellow senior Christina Gwyn Trice received the win against Illinois. She struck out 11 batters and gave up no runs on two hits, while walking only three batters.

The Cougars struck early against Illinois, with a run in the first inning from sophomore shortstop Amanda Vance. She hit an infield single and scored off of a single to right from Snow.

The score remained at 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning when freshman catcher Jessica Purcell scored, followed by a single from Snow to bring in Vance in the top of the fifth to extend BYU's lead, 3-0.

The Cougars rallied in the top of the seventh inning when Snow hit a three-run homer to left field. Following the momentum of the homer, the team recorded four more runs to finish the game 10-0.

BYU came out fighting in its second game against No. 3 Texas A&M. The Cougars were led by senior right fielder Emi Snow Willing and freshman second baseman Kristin Dealhoussaye, who both went 2-for-3 during the game.

Sophomore Christie Zinanti pitched 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits, including back-to-back home runs. Gwyn Trice relieved Zinanti and gave up one hit and no runs in 3.2 innings.

Junior center fielder Monica Gonzales scored BYU's lone run in the bottom of the first. A single up the middle from Snow Willing knocked in Gonzales from third to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

BYU held its lead until the top of the third inning when back-to-back home runs from the three and four hole gave Texas A&M the lead. A single in the top of the fourth inning brought in another Aggie run and extended their lead, 3-1.

The Cougars tried to overcome the deficit, but left four runners on base during the remaining innings leaving the score at 3-1.

The loss marked BYU's lowest scoring margin against top-10 teams this season. They are now 4-1 against ranked opponents, and will play No. 22 Louisiana Lafayette on Saturday at 12:15 p.m., after facing Illinois again at 10 a.m. Livestats for both games are available at www.byucougars.com.

Heading to 2008 Aggie Classic

Image

PROVO -- Coming off two tough losses, the BYU women's softball team (11-7) travels to College Station, Texas, for the 2008 Aggie Classic March 6-8.

BYU is scheduled to play five games, beginning on Thursday with No. 3 Texas A&M at 6 p.m. On Friday the Cougars are slated against Illinois at 12:15 p.m. and the Aggies again at 5:15 p.m. The Cougars face off against Illinois again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and then No. 22 Louisiana Lafayette at 12:15 p.m.

"We are working on maintaining longer stretches of quality play," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We need to have solid pitching, good defense and strength at the plates for longer time periods."

The offensive power of BYU hopes to make a return. As a team, they carry a .294 batting average with 21 home runs, hitting at least one home run in 15 of its 18 games.

From the Circle, BYU is led by Senior Christina Gwyn Trice. She maintains a 1.15 ERA and is 5-2 on the season with 88 strike outs. As a team, the Cougars carry a 1.76 ERA.

Thursday's game will mark BYU's fifth all-time meeting with the Texas A&M. The Aggies are 22-3 on the season and have stayed in the top-five of the polls during this season.

The Fighting Illini are the Cougars only unranked opponent at the 2008 Aggie Classic. Illinois is 12-8 on the season. BYU has faced the Fighting Illini five times in the past, coming out on top twice.

Saturday will mark the first meeting between the Cougars and No. 18 Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns are 10-3 and have maintained a position in the top-25 all season, floating between No. 16 and No. 24.

Livestats for all five games are available at www.byucougars.com, with video coverage available for both games against Texas A&M.
