Two Games, Two Losses

COLLEGE STATION -- The BYU women's softball team lost its final two games of the 2008 Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas, losing to Illinois, 14-5, and Louisiana Lafyette, 7-3. The Cougars are now 12-10 on the season.

Of the Cougars eight runs on the day, seven came from home runs. Stephanie Platt Hopkins belted a grand slam to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning against Illinois. The hit marks Platt Hopkins' first grand slam of her career and her second home run of the year.

Dani Snow hit two solo shots in the second game, and Angeline Quiocho smashed a two-run bomb in the game as well. Quiocho leads the Cougars with 10 home runs and is trailed by Snow who has seven.

BYU started off rocky against Illinois, giving up seven runs in the first inning. The Cougars mounted an offensive threat in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, freshman second baseman Kristin Delahoussaye was hit by a pitch to bring in BYU's first run.

Nine-hole hitter, Platt Hopkins came up to bat with two outs and the bases loaded and knocked the ball over the left field fence to close in on Fighting Illini's lead, 7-5.

Illinois answered back, holding the Cougars scoreless through the remainder of the game and managing seven additional runs to finish 14-5.

Against Louisiana Lafayette, the Cougars gave up one run in the top of the first inning and answered back in the second inning with Quiocho's two-RBI homer. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning when a double brought in one run for Louisiana Lafayette.

With a 2-2 tie, Snow hit her first solo homer of the night to regain BYU's lead at 3-2.

A rough sixth inning gave Louisiana Lafayette a four-run lead over the Cougars. The Ragin' Cajuns totaled five runs off of one hit and three walks.

Snow led BYU in the bottom of the sixth inning with another long ball over center field, but a lack of base runners left the score at 7-4.

The Cougs next face Nebraska on March 14 and 15, at the UNLV Round Robin. Livestats and live audio for both games is available at www.byucougars.com.

Heading to 2008 Aggie Classic

Image

PROVO -- Coming off two tough losses, the BYU women's softball team (11-7) travels to College Station, Texas, for the 2008 Aggie Classic March 6-8.

BYU is scheduled to play five games, beginning on Thursday with No. 3 Texas A&M at 6 p.m. On Friday the Cougars are slated against Illinois at 12:15 p.m. and the Aggies again at 5:15 p.m. The Cougars face off against Illinois again at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and then No. 22 Louisiana Lafayette at 12:15 p.m.

"We are working on maintaining longer stretches of quality play," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We need to have solid pitching, good defense and strength at the plates for longer time periods."

The offensive power of BYU hopes to make a return. As a team, they carry a .294 batting average with 21 home runs, hitting at least one home run in 15 of its 18 games.

From the Circle, BYU is led by Senior Christina Gwyn Trice. She maintains a 1.15 ERA and is 5-2 on the season with 88 strike outs. As a team, the Cougars carry a 1.76 ERA.

Thursday's game will mark BYU's fifth all-time meeting with the Texas A&M. The Aggies are 22-3 on the season and have stayed in the top-five of the polls during this season.

The Fighting Illini are the Cougars only unranked opponent at the 2008 Aggie Classic. Illinois is 12-8 on the season. BYU has faced the Fighting Illini five times in the past, coming out on top twice.

Saturday will mark the first meeting between the Cougars and No. 18 Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns are 10-3 and have maintained a position in the top-25 all season, floating between No. 16 and No. 24.

Livestats for all five games are available at www.byucougars.com, with video coverage available for both games against Texas A&M.
