STANFORD, Calif. (March, 21, 2008) -- A walkoff home run from freshman Caschjen Davis in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the BYU women's softball team a 7-6 win over East Carolina on Friday at the Stanford Invitational II, and improved the Cougars to a 17-11 record.
Davis, batting in the seventh hole, came up to bat with the score tied at six all. Her lead off homer is her first home run on the season, and the first walk-off bomb for BYU this year.
The Cougars started the game with a large lead over the Pirates. Freshman pitcher Paige Affleck controlled the early innings, giving BYU an opportunity to take the lead.
In the bottom of the second inning three hits brought in one run for BYU, while the third inning was more fruitful with three runs off of three hits. BYU leading batter Daniela Snow knocked in the first run of the inning, and Emi Snow-Willing and Stephanie Platt-Hopkins followed with RBI of their own.
Affleck started the fourth inning with a comfortable lead and had a no hitter going into the top of the fifth inning. A double put a runner in scoring position and a botched fielder's choice gave East Carolina its first run.
Christie Zinanti came in to relieve Affleck and she gave up triple with the bases loaded and a wild pitch allowed another runner to reach home, giving the Pirates a 6-4 lead. Christina Gwyn-Trice relieved Zinanti at the top of the sixth and allowed no runs.
Daniela Snow hit a two-RBI double down the left field line to tie the game 6-6. Snow had led the Cougars with three RBI. Gwyn-Trice retired three straight Pirate batters, bringing BYU to the bottom of the seventh with a tied ball game. Davis' home run gave the Cougars the one run needed to prevent the game from going into extra innings.
Riding on a five-game winning streak, the Cougars play a double header on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational II. They face No. 5 Stanford at 4 p.m. and Wisconsin at 6 p.m. Livestats for both games are available at www.byucougars.com, while live video for the Stanford game will be available.
