Cougars Come From Behind for Win

Image

PROVO -- The BYU Women's softball team (35-16, 10-6) grabbed the lead in the Mountain West Conference standings with another come from behind win over UNLV during senior day(23-34-1, 3-11).

Christina Gwyn-Trice led the Cougars when she recorded 14 strikeouts against the Rebels, while giving up two walks.

"It really shows the character of the team to fall be hind and come back for the win" BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "The game was full of highs and lows and it was emotionally charged. Our team was able to rise to the occasion."

In the first inning Gwyn-Trice struck out two batters and gave up a singled and two doubles to allow two runs to score before striking out the next batter. With a 2-0 deficit BYU senior Dani Snow hit an RBI double to even out the score 2-1 at the end of the first.

BYU tied the game in the bottom of the second when a double, down the right field line by Krisitn Dealhoussaye, brought in one run.

Gwyn-Trice retired 10 straight batters before allowing a UNLV baserunner. With one out in the top of the fifth Gwyn-Trice walked one batter and gave up a triple to right field to score the runner. A fielding error allowed the runner to reach home, giving the Rebels a 4-2 lead.

The Cougars came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning when Snow led off with a single and Angie Quiocho ripped a single to right field to grab an RBI when pinch runner Whitney Nix slid into home. A single from freshman Jessica Purcell brought runners to the corners. UNLV intentionally walked Emi Snow-Willing to load the bases with one out. With the bases loaded the Rebels grabbed a strikeout and a fly ball to leave all three runners on base and UNLV held onto the lead, 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Quiocho knocked a three-run homer bringing in sophomore Amanda Vance and Snow, to give the Cougars the 6-4 lead.

The Rebels answered back when they launched a two-RBI home run to tie the game with six run apiece in the top of the seventh.

Snow-Willing reached first on an UNLV throwing error and advanced to second off of a sacrifice bunt and reached third on a single from Delahoussaye. Monica Gonzales recorded the game winning RBI when she hit a ball over the infield to bring in Snow-Willing from third base for the 7-6 win.

Immediately following the game the Cougars honored their three seniors: Gwyn-Trice, Snow and Snow-Willing.

The Cougars take a break from MWC play when they face Northern Colorado at home, Tuesday at 6 p.m. BYU will continue its race for the conference title on Friday and Saturday in Salt Lake against Utah.
