CHAPEL HILL -- The BYU Women's softball team (44-19) bounced back after a 9-3 loss to No. 23 Georgia, led by a no-hitter from Christina Gwyn-Trice in a 1-0 win over Campbell.
The Cougars will advance to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional Championship against Georgia at 1 p.m. at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Gwyn-Trice blew through the Campbell lineup and tied her career-high, 14 strike outs, with 10 looking. She remained perfect through four innings, and hit one batsman in the top of the fifth.
"I could tell she had it in her from the first inning," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We just kept hitting right to the Campbell players, so it was great to have her step up and control the game the way she did."
Despite runners reaching first in every inning, BYU was unable to bring a runner home to break the 0-all tie.
In the fifth inning freshman Kristin Delahoussaye got a free pass to first, when Campbell pitcher Lauren Stephan gave up her second walk of the night. Senior Daniela Snow hit a stand-up double to the centerfield wall to bring in Delahoussaye for the only run of the game.
The single run was all BYU needed to back up Gwyn-Trice. Only one Campbell runner would reach first again, and off of a fielding error.
Against Georgia BYU was not as fortunate.
The Cougar pitching staff was unable to control the game, giving up a combined 9 runs off of 12 hits and 9 walks. Christina Gwyn-Trice received the loss for the team and is now 18-8 on the season.
After a scoreless two innings, junior Stephanie Platt-Hopkins started the third inning with a single, shot up the middle at the Georgia pitcher. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kristin Delahoussaye, and reached third on a ground out. With two outs, Amanda Vance singled to drive in the first run of the game.
Heading into the fourth inning, Georgia's offense came alive with a doubled followed by a single and another double. The Cougars' played smart defense to keep lead runners from reaching the plate.
Christina Gwyn-Trice came in to relieve starting pitcher Paige Affleck, and worked herself into a jam. With two outs, Gwyn-Trice walked in one run and gave up a two, two-RBI singles before Christie Zinanti came into to pitch the final out. Georgia totaled five runs off five hits to take the lead, 5-1.
BYU came out swinging to answers Georgia's five runs. In the bottom half of the inning sophomore Angeline Quiocho was awarded first on balls, and freshman Jessica Purcell knocked the ball over the left-center wall to add two runs to BYU's total.
After the quick two runs, relief pitcher Christie Hamilton came in and forced three outs to retire the side and protecting Georgia's 5-3 lead.
Georgia extended its lead in the fifth inning with a two-run bomb. After giving up the runs, Zinanti battled back to retire the side forcing a ground out and striking out two.
A stand-up double, with the bases loaded, in the top of the sixth brought in two runs to extend Georgia's lead, 9-3. The Cougar defense managed to highlight the inning by throwing out the third runner with a throw from junior Monica Gonzales.
BYU kept Georgia from producing any more runs, but were unable to produce any runs of its own to conclude the game 9-3.
"We are looking forward revenge," Eakin said. "I think that we owe them something."
