OREM -- Back-to-back homers in the seventh inning sealed a 9-2 win for the BYU softball team against Utah Valley on Tuesday night. The Cougars, 27-14 overall, extended their winning streak to eight games.

Both Stephanie Hopkins and Caschjen Davis hit roundtrippers in the game that was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday, but was moved because of weather. The homers came from the seven and eight-hole hitters, Davis led the team going 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and Hopkins finished 2-for-3.

“Stephanie has been on fire during the last month,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “Caschjen has capitalized on every opportunity she has gotten. It’s nice to be able to have hitters all over the lineup who produce.”

After three innings the score was tied 2-2. The Cougars scored two runs on a single from Jessica Purcell that hit just beyond the infield dirt. The Wolverines countered with an RBI single and a wild pitch that brought around a runner.

BYU broke the tie with a double in the left-center gap from Davis that scored two runs and added to its lead with Kristin Delahoussaye’s single to left field that brought in Davis.

After Utah Valley's three-consecutive singles to load the bases, Christie Zinanti came in to relive starting pitcher Paige Affleck . Zinanti retired three-straight batters to keep the Wolverines off the board in the bottom of the fourth.

BYU took a 7-2 lead in the fifth inning scoring on a ground out from Davis, that brought in a runner on third, and taking another base on a throwing error on the same play to score another runner.

With back-to-back homers in the top of the seventh inning, the Cougars took a 9-2 lead.

“They started slowed but this is a team that stays after it until they explode,” Eakin said. “We’ve been able to string together complete ball games. We are where we need to be – the key is to maintain it.”

The Cougars take their 3-0 Mountain West Conference record to Salt Lake City, where they will face Utah on Friday and Saturday. The games will be the first two of a three-game Deseret First Duel series.

Game Time Changes

Image

PROVO -- Indications of poor weather conditions forced the BYU softball team to reschedule its game against Utah Valley for Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Orem, Utah.

The Cougars will take their 26-14 record to the cross-town matchup. BYU has won 19 of its 20 games against the Wolverines. Utah Valley is 14-18 this season.

Following the single game contest, BYU will continue Mountain West Conference play. The Cougars will head north to face in-state rival Utah on Friday and Saturday. The games will be the first of a three-game Deseret First Duel softball series.

Last season the Cougars took the individual sport trophy as the two teams split four games and the run deferential swung in the favor of BYU.

The Cougars look to maintain their perfect MWC record while in Salt Lake. Utah is 0-2 in conference play and 13-21 overall.
