PROVO -- BYU softball remained perfect at home and in Mountain West Conference play with a 5-2 victory over UNLV Saturday at Gail Miller Field. The Cougars — who have won 13 straight — are now 32-14 overall and 7-0 at home and in the MWC while the Rebels fall to 25-17 overall and 2-6 in league action.
"It's great to continue to put complete games together," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We got ourselves into trouble with bases on balls, but we worked our way out of jams as the runs continued to come."
Paige Affleck pitched a complete-game, two-hitter for BYU with nine strikeouts — placing her third all-time in school history for career strikeouts with 290. Andrea Ramirez got things done at the plate with a 3-for-3, three-RBI performance. With two doubles Ramirez moves into second in school history for career doubles with 39. Her three RBIs give her 109 for her career, good for ninth all-time
After Affleck opened the game by striking out the side the Cougars scored in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Messerschmidt doubled with one out for BYU and later scored on a single by Ramirez.
Affleck needed just eight pitches to take care of the Rebels in the second inning and the Cougars manufactured a run to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Stephanie Hopkins led off by reaching first on an error by UNLV short stop Jaci Hull. Hopkins advanced to second on a Krista Hicks walk and later scored on a Kristi Delahoussaye ground out.
The Rebels threatened in the fourth as Affleck walked the first two batters of the inning. Hull and Brittany Bollinger advanced to second and third, respectively, on a ground out to first. Bollinger tried to score on a fielder’s choice but Cougar short stop Hicks threw her out at home. Affleck struck out the next batter to end the inning.
BYU used two hits in the fourth to add another run and make the score 3-0. Hicks singled and was later thrown out at second on a Monica Gonzales groundout. Delahoussaye hit a ball deep to right field to score Gonzales from first. The inning ended when Delahoussaye was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
Ramirez came through with runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth, stroking a double to right-center for her second and third RBIs of the day to give the Cougars a 5-0 advantage.
The Rebels ended the shutout and the no-hit bid in the sixth when Kendall Fearn hit a double down the leftfield line to score Hull from first, who reached on a walk. Affleck got two of the next three batters to ground out to end the inning. UNLV added another run in the seventh on a Brittany Bolinger groundout.
BYU scored five runs on five hits and had no errors while the Rebels had two runs on two hits and had one error.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, April 23, with a home doubleheader against cross-town foe Utah Valley. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Gail Miller Field.

PROVO -- For the second-straight week weather has forced adjustments to the BYU softball schedule, as the Cougars will now host Southern Utah for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
The game was originally schedule for later Tuesday, but weather forecasts sparked the preemptive move in an effort to play both games.
The meeting will mark a family reunion for BYU catcher Jessica Purcell and outfielder Angeline Quiocho, who are cousins, as Purcell’s sister Jenavieve plays outfield for the Thunderbirds.
Following the doubleheader BYU returns to Mountain West Conference play on Thursday when it hosts San Diego State at 7 p.m.
BYU and SDSU were selected to contend for the conference title in a pre-season coaches’ poll. The Cougars currently sit atop the MWC standings at 5-0, while the Aztecs trail one game back, at 4-1.
The Cougars will also face UNLV on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Both Thursday’s game and Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on BYUTV.
