Six-Run Surge Leads to Win

Image

LAS -- A six-run second inning yielded a 6-1 win for the BYU softball team over UNLV Thursday evening. With the win the Cougars remain perfect in Mountain West Conference play at 8-0, 35-14 overall.

The victory increased BYU's winning streak to 16 games, tying the programs’ longest winning streak set in 2007. The current Cougar win streak dates back to March 24, giving way to a perfect April.

UNLV held BYU scoreless over six innings, but could only produce one run to counter the Cougars’ six scored in the second inning.

Sophomore righthander Paige Affleck received the winning decision, her 17th of the season. Affleck allowed one run on four hits, while striking out eight batters.

Angeline Quiocho led the team from the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI. She increased her team-leading total stolen bases to 10, taking one bag in the first inning.

BYU capitalized on the Rebel’s errors to bring in four runs in the second inning. Jessica Purcell, Krista Hicks and Andrea Ramirez all reached base on an error that brought in runs. Kristin Delahoussaye hit an RBI ground out, and Angeline Quiocho hit an RBI single.

UNLV scored its lone run in the third inning when the nine-hole batter reached on an fielding error and eventually scored.

After the Cougars left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, the Rebels tried to rally in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff double. Purcell, the BYU catcher, picked off the baserunner at second base and Affleck struck out two straight batters to end the game.

The Cougars look to stay atop of the conference when they travel to San Diego State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The Aztecs trail BYU by 1 1/2games in the MWC standings.

Cougars Contend for First

Image

PROVO -- The No. 24 BYU softball team (34-14, 7-0 MWC) travels to Las Vegas and San Diego for four games as the Cougars look to stay atop the Mountain West Conference during the road trip.

BYU aims to keep its 15-game winning streak alive with the upcoming contests. The 15 games mark the second-longest winning streak in school history. The longest winning streak spanned 16 games in 2007, when BYU went on to win the MWC Championship.

The Cougars will face UNLV on Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT before heading to San Diego State for three games. BYU was originally scheduled to face SDSU at home on April 16, but a snowstorm kept the game from being played at Miller Park. The game will be made up as part of a Saturday afternoon twinbill.

BYU and San Diego State, who were picked to contend for the MWC title in a pre-season coaches’ poll, are the last two teams to face one another at least once this season. The Cougars lead the conference at 7-0, while the Aztecs are 1 games back at 8-2.

Whichever team takes the three-game series will settle into a secure spot at first in the MWC standings.

BYU swept UNLV in a two games at Miller Park this season. The Cougars won the first game 7-1 and the second game 5-2. BYU’s pitching staff led the way as Christie Zinanti struck out 11 batters and Paige Affleck threw a two-hitter in the second game.

The three-game series with San Diego State begins on Friday at 6 p.m. PDT, and the doubleheader begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. PDT.
