SAN -- A walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped BYU softball’s 16-game winning streak, as the Cougars fell 5-4 against San Diego State Friday night.
BYU received its first loss in Mountain West Conference play at the hands of the Aztecs, after giving up a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning. San Diego State rallied to generate four runs to force extra innings and an error put the baserunner in scoring position, before a single brought her home.
With the loss the Cougars drop to 34-15 overall and 8-1 in conference play, marking their first loss since March 21. The Aztecs are now 32-16 and 9-3. The Cougars still hold the lead in the conference standings, but San Diego State cut sits only 1 games out.
Defensive errors proved to be BYU’s downfall. The Cougars totaled five errors in the contest, three of which allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score.
Sophomore pitcher Paige Affleck (17-8, 1.92) was charged with the loss, as she pitched three outs of relief in the contest. Starting pitcher Chrisite Zinanti gave up the four tying runs, three earned.
BYU’s leading slugger Jessica Purcell got the Cougars on the board with a leadoff solo homer to left field in the second inning.
Andrea Ramirez tripled on a ball sliced up the left-center alley to bring in Angeline Quiocho from first base in the second inning, giving BYU a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars kept picking away at the San Diego State pitching staff to manufacture two insurance runs in the top of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Kristin Dealhoussaye singled to left field, as the speedy Stephanie Hopkins managed to score when the throw to the plate was not in time.
Tiffany Messerschmidt singled to load the bases for Quiocho, who stroked the ball to right field to bring in a run. Quiocho finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI.
With a comfortable lead, Zinanti continued to dominate over the Aztec batters. Defensive errors in both the third and fifth inning put runners in scoring position for the Aztecs, but Zinanti retired the side both times to halt the scoring threats.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh BYU held a 4-0 lead. Zinanti retired the first two batters before giving up back-to-back singles. She hit a batter to load the bases and walked in the Aztecs’ first run of the game.
Erin Floros singled to bring in two runs and an additional run scored on a Cougar error to tie the game 4-4. Righthander Paige Affleck came in to relieve Zinanti and recorded the third out to force extra innings.
The heart of the BYU order came up to bat in the eighth inning, but three batters went down swinging. Only Ramirez was able to make contact for a hit; she finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI triple.
A throwing error allowed the Tonye McCorkle to reach base in the bottom half of the frame. McCorkle stole second base and an error on the throw allowed the Aztecs baserunner to advance to third with only one out.
Affleck struck out Monica Alnes to grab the second out, but a single up the middle from Jessica Camello brought in the go-ahead run.
The Cougars look to bounce back when they return to the diamond to face San Diego State in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. PDT.

PROVO -- The No. 24 BYU softball team (34-14, 7-0 MWC) travels to Las Vegas and San Diego for four games as the Cougars look to stay atop the Mountain West Conference during the road trip.
BYU aims to keep its 15-game winning streak alive with the upcoming contests. The 15 games mark the second-longest winning streak in school history. The longest winning streak spanned 16 games in 2007, when BYU went on to win the MWC Championship.
The Cougars will face UNLV on Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT before heading to San Diego State for three games. BYU was originally scheduled to face SDSU at home on April 16, but a snowstorm kept the game from being played at Miller Park. The game will be made up as part of a Saturday afternoon twinbill.
BYU and San Diego State, who were picked to contend for the MWC title in a pre-season coaches’ poll, are the last two teams to face one another at least once this season. The Cougars lead the conference at 7-0, while the Aztecs are 1 games back at 8-2.
Whichever team takes the three-game series will settle into a secure spot at first in the MWC standings.
BYU swept UNLV in a two games at Miller Park this season. The Cougars won the first game 7-1 and the second game 5-2. BYU’s pitching staff led the way as Christie Zinanti struck out 11 batters and Paige Affleck threw a two-hitter in the second game.
The three-game series with San Diego State begins on Friday at 6 p.m. PDT, and the doubleheader begins on Saturday at 1 p.m. PDT.
